i thinned down all the gears by 1mm (they have 0.5mm total of material either side so gears themselves are only 0.5mm thinner which i wouldn't imagine weakens them at all) to fit the little plate on top and there is that much slop in them to begin with that with the head of the bolts sit just under flush with the ring gear.. have driven it around and seems fine.. but all just guessing Confused

Got everything wired and in working order next to do was test everything.. the lifting part of the mechanism works great but self righting not so much. I guess i wasn't as lucky as i hoped when i just slapped together the mechanism and assumed it would work regardless Confused
So here is the not so attractive arms, and no they aren't raindeer antlers!! haha >_>

For a change i also left enough room to neatly mount all the electronics Smile

All done.

well been done for about a week just been busy working on something even cooler.
Thick chunk of polycarb slapped on top is necessary after seeing how well this other project is going Twisted Evil

Been giving the worked gearboxes a fair bit of a test and seem to be holding up, though knowing how it usually goes all works great until the day of the event Rolling Eyes

Real keen for the event!! but back to creating evil Smile

I give you "BRUTUS"

https://youtu.be/tryTY3YfgbI

2.2kg Axe powered by 270kv NTM Brushless gearing 9:1

First time messing with axe robots and this one seems to be pretty good.. its quite stable on impact and packs a fair punch.

Its got 3 stages of gearing, 2 using sprockets and chain and the final stage is a V belt, the idea is that big impacts the belt will slip a little and save the brushless

Haha seems I'm just a sucker for big events that i can afford to go to Rolling Eyes ..
Yeah rolls back over from all positions with ease, that would be most unfortunate if it didn't when 80% of the field are flippers/lifters.

Robowars 2015 Vivid Event Report

Was great to be back in the action.. This sport/hobby you really just can never get away from. lures you back in and for good reason.

Was a great event, awesome job Steve and Co who put it all together..

Now the robots:
Lifter (Hextech) - The concept of the lifter was there just didn't really find it effective enough to bother trying the stack approach, needs to be a lot faster and more aggressive in the action and not having any front support to hold the weight when lifting made it hard to try to do what it was supposed to but eh lessoned learned.. next version will be quite good (i hope)..

Only just pulled the robot out of the suitcase, hadn't really inspected any damage up until now and looks like it took a beating at some point i wish i could remember when and how haha

Major damage was the main spline coming out of the winch gearbox snapping from its welds (welding cast is a great idea right!?) but yeah that made the lifter pretty much useless from that point on ah well..

1 thing is for sure this is the final event and i mean final event you will ever see cordless drill motors in my robots, they used to be somewhat reliable but now that are a guaranteed failure (hush Aaron Rolling Eyes )

Axe bot (Brutus) - Worked well all event, drove nice from what Adam said only problem is it just seemed to be down on power behind the axe. not sure if something happened when he rebound his TX for failsafing or just simply due to the varying heights of everyones robots couldnt build up enough momentum in time to imposed maximum damage.
Robot itself has tonnes of potential already feel the ground rumble from future 8 cell power Wink

No photos as its now in the hands of Adam and after the ordeal of rushing it together in 2 weeks its his problem now Razz

But yes all in all was a great event, now to calm down and forget about robots for a while and get back to reality and important life stuff Crying or Very sad
