Weapon of choice?

Hi everyone... Just wanted each of your opinions on weapons... What's your favourite and why?

I'll start off and just say claws... not too entertaining but I just love the idea of weapons that give you control over opponents.

spinners for one, the ability to cause random destruction on your own robot and others is very appealing. also the unique engineering challenge they pose..

in particular undercutters, a huge spinning mass attacking the weakest part of the robot in many cases is just such a clever idea (props to brian nave for that one Very Happy )

secondly i like brick-bots / rammers. the ability to just take over the match with blunt force while not skipping a beat is something i just want in a robot, ive got pretty close to a brickbot with cobra just need more drive Smile

I agree with phil and Marshall, flippers are good because they dont rip the holy hell out of every opponent every time while still giving an entertaining show

I perfer the chimera approach of Dead Metal. Once you in the claws the only thing you can do is sit and wait for the other weapon to bit in. I'm going to have to find a lighter actuator.

Have always liked claws and jaws on robots and a crab was my inspiration to build Pinscher/vipers jaws. Rebuilt three times it was built with spinners in mind. The jaws support itsef from horizontal forces like a mouthguard. The speed of the jaws is very good considering it uses the weakest 540 size motors available. hate to think how sick it will be when I find a pair of thick wired 540's. It has a nu trick as well, it can smack its top jaw on the ground lifting its body quickly up and down making it very animated and loud. Hoping this might get me loose if a wedge gets under me as well. Dont know what it really is yet. A ram, lifter, clamp, biter, thwack, potential launcher attack bot. And it is so responsive on the stick to drive am so looking forward to next fights.

There has to be sparks flying, the sound of grinding or chrunching metal.

That is the wepon of choise.
Leaves it open to a wide choice really.

as the foot not states!!!

hmmm, i would have to say i like crushers (like razor had)
it lets you do damage that can disable a robot, not just do cosmetic damage
I also like weighted spinners, because they too can do a lot of damage
If i couldnt have a spinner or a cruncher i would most likley go for something that grips then drills holes into the insides or something.
Flippers are ok, but really they have to be very high powered to do actual damage to the robots, and not many robots are not invertable these days.

Here are my two weapons of choice:

Driving - If you cannot drive your robot well enough, it doesn't matter how good your weapon is, you have a much lower chance of winning. for an example, look at Ian Lewis, Razer's driver. Razer is not the most perfect bot around, it only has 2.5mm steel armour, a slow weapon, and a moderate drive system but when coupled with Ian's superior driving skills, Razer is a mean machine, and has won because of it. Some robots were running nearly 16mm of armour in Robot Wars Series 5, yet Razer still managed to win with only 2.5mm.

Reliability - With out this, your chances of winning fall nearly clean out the window. Using Razer as another example here, it never won much until it became reliable, then it won two world championships which is by no means an easy feat!

Crushers and Spinners are my fav "weapons" besides the ones above

Another aspect is the balance of everything working together and keeping things in relation to each other. A weapon on its own is useless, it needs to be mobile to get to the target. A drive system in itself is a weapon to some. Distribution of weight is a skill as many early builders will have this incredible thick armour but have weak wheels so no one will bother attcking the armour.
Choice of weapon means appropriate mounting and secure base.
IN our weight class being seen to do damage is a factor. Saws that twrow off sparks are a crowd and judge pleaser so the iluusion of damage is another influence. A good strong wheelbase can get you out of trouble if your weapon isnt haapenng so I think that your drive power is also a big factor. So much to consider thats what makes this sport so cool.

Driving is a skill Aaron. Smile It can be used as an advantage, but I wouldn't say it was a weapon. Wink

Although I do agree on reliability.
