The spindle makes a heck of a noise when it hits the water at 15krpm.

So Shiny! did you change the design - there seems to be more aluminium where the ring bearings fit?

That's pretty great. Nice finish too.

I like that adorable little swarf pile. If only i could be that efficient with my machining waste - http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab60/glenscads/Mill%20Lathe/IMG_20150305_005423_zps1aj4xysk.jpg lmao

Or build this mini furnace powered by charcoal bricks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHD10DjxM1g It should be cheaper to use charcoal rather than propane.

What sort of frankenalloy will all that swarf make? Laughing

Got motor mounts?

And things on scales?

How about parts holders
http://imgur.com/Jc4jNeu

On a sad note the heavier frame coupled with the denser aluminium, (6061 is 2.7 7075 is 2.81) is making the ring decidedly smaller than I would like.
So mounting teeth is proving difficult without weakening the ring.

worked out how to embed lower res version of the imgur pics yay
stick an l after the filename, before the extension.
(lower case L)
so hUu97dO.jpg becomes hUu97dOl.jpg

higher res images are in the gallery at http://imgur.com/a/ccQ3N

swarf bucket, with foot for scale

Swarf leak, when the filter fills up the coolant overflows and takes swarf with it. The filter is about 2 litres in size.

inside the mill

weighing the bot chassis with all its bits and pieces to calculate the ring weight

starting to finally get a decent finish on the 4140 bar, lowering the tool to precisely 2.5 smidgens below the centerline on the lathe helped a whole bunch, using a fresh tip on the carbide helped another bunch.
you can see it getting better as I went along (and you can see how many other passes I did to get here lol)
with coolant dripping on it there is no harmonic.
This is going to be a new center shaft and end bell for the wep motor it'll be a 3mm shaft with a 30mm cap on it.
I'm thinking I'll probably grind or sand it to size as the 4140 wants a .7mm depth of cut to get a finish on it, and that is a scary cut on a 3mm shaft to be accurate enough for bearings.
so i'll cut it say .1 oversize then a few light cuts which make it all torn up surface, then sand/grind to finished size.
