The reason that US builders use tool steel is partly historical but mostly because S7 tool steel comes annealed and is much easier to work with before its hardened. If they had a professional fabricator who could machine AR400 / Bisalloy, it might be cheaper overall. The big advantage of S7 tool steel is hardness - the blades on Scissorhands stay sharp much longer than if they were Bisalloy.

Maybe you should build a decent ant instead of a poxy featherweight Laughing

HobbyKing stuff is getting more well known now, though mostly for the insect classes and radio gear. I think it's one of those things where it got a bad reputation a few years ago and people have been slow to start trying the newer stuff. Along that lines, I've switched my bots almost fully over to HobbyKing Rx's and my newest 30 uses a Nano-Power 6s 2650mah pack to run it. Using the BR-XL controller instead of the ESCheap85's. They've got fairly close specs (BR-XL: 80A cont., 6s max, 45.6g $100USD retail vs. ESCheap85: 85A cont., 6s max, 60g ~67USD retail)

That being said, if the ESCheaps got a US distribution location, I could see the popularity rising fairly quickly.

Milling biz isn't that much of an issue, use carbide tools and grind off (with a grinder) the heat affected zone from plasma cutting before machining that bits hard.

I must have been doing it wrong then, I used a face mill with good quality inserts to mill Biz 400 and the Inserts wore out really fast. Drilling large holes in it is a royal pain as well, you need cobalt bits AND a good drill sharpener. I'm not against using it, just pointing out why working with annealed steel can be easier.

Team bot for RG2013 or Combots?

While the heavyweights are generating all the excitement, I'm interested in starting a team for a lightweight - the shipping is so much cheaper and we could build a real medal contender for a moderate price.

To raise interest in the project I will put the following on the table: $2,000 cash + lightweight parts + access to McMaster parts + Manual machining + Team Whyachi custom parts + Titanium and any other raw materials in stock. What the project needs is mad Rhino CAD skills, TIG welding, CNC machining, bright ideas and dedication.

While I like horizontal spinners, I think a vertical spinner design using a Bisalloy frame is the best design to take to the US. The plan would be to super-size a design like Demon, fix any perceived weaknesses by throwing cash and ideas at it, then testing it locally before taking it to the US.

If there is enough interest, I will start up a build thread; I am over in Gibraltar until May 6 and want to get cracking as soon as I am back. Parts I have in stock for this include a huge Scorpion outrunner, Castle ICE 120 HV ESC, many Colson wheels, Victor 885 ESCs, Ti sheet in various thicknesses from 1 to 9mm, aluminium bar stock in 2024 & 7075, assorted acetal, nylon & UMHW plastic, assorted screws up to M12.

Personally I wouldn't try machining bisalloy. Better to spend most of your time designing everything in the computer, including wiring and plugs, and then just waterjet cut it once and glue the bits together.

I don't think I've got any more pics or videos. I wasn't fast enough to get a good spot beside the arena. I think they were saying there was almost too many people watching. Plus the polycarb was getting a bit old and scuffed up which was fine to watch from the audiance but it messed up everyones camera focus. Only good videos came from standing against the arena.

Agreed - my idea of machininig Bisalloy is waterjetting, drilling holes to size and then welding. Milling would be a last resort, even if we have an expert in Queensland Wink

BTW: that is a HUGE crowd at Robogames! Public interest must be picking up.

And to answer Glen, I think I heard that Electric Boogaloo had a Mars Etek clone on its weapon. Maybe took four years to build by a group of insect guys.

When I was sitting in the audiance I was listening to people who were comenting on robots they saw on the Killer Robots show.

Yeah from memory in "killer robots" it looked like they could only fill one stand with spectators...looks like they need a bigger venue.

Did they end up having a crew filming this year?

Daniel....so are you the first Aussie to ever have a heavy in there?

Like the lightweight Idea Nick!
