QRSC - Featherweight Arena Build Day

We have been running with the same arena setup for quite a few years now and it has received basically 0 attention since it was made. There is many things which we need to do to it and I think if we spent one weekend just working on it we could get most of them sorted.

There is 3 main issue with the current arena
- The roof
- The holes in the panels which join them together
- The panels bowing out.

I would also like to remove the bolts in the polycarb and make them slide in. This is because those bolts are the main reason for the wear and tear on the polycarb as they scratch the panels when they are stacked or moved and they also are the point at which the polycarb cracks. It would also make the polycarb easily removable for transport and cleaning. Downside would be that the overlapping ones might need an extra strip of steel but would still be prettier than what they are now.

So what do I need?
I can probably source/fund all of the steel we need to do these mods/upgrades and equipment. All I really need is help making it happen.

This means we need to settle on a design for the roof. (I don't mind the design Daniel currently has despite the massive pain of making a truss) It would be nice to be able to use the current arena panels on the roof but I don't think its essential. I think if we are in the warehouse anyway there isn't a big advantage to clear roofing and we can prolly just go back to MDF like we had.

Then I need people to come and help get it done.

None of the problems are very hard to fix but its too much work for me or anyone else to do themselves. I have no idea how Andrew & Daniel managed to make the whole arena. I think if we all pitch in we could get 95% of it done in one weekend. I will bring along a welder (aka dad) and I can probably bring drop saw, stick welder, angle grinders any other equipment we should need. I will have to OK it with lemming if we can do it at the hackerspace but it seems like a good place.

I don't have a date in mind at the moment but sometime after the next event would be good. Time to discuss before hand and then agree on a date then.

For those with solidworks 2010.

This is what I think we should do to the panels

The red bits are the additions.

Crappy Jpeg not really sure how to export with Solidworks. But you can get an idea. No measurements as I am not really sure of any of them.

Few flaws in that design. No easy way to weld the 40x40 Angle on.

I just came back from the state brass band championships and almost got the heavy weight drawing out of my system, so I should have time to finish drawing the arena now.

Redrew the panel last night to make it simpler to add on and fix up the flaws in first design. Only thing which I still haven't worked out is how to do the corner ones.

Been thinking about an easy way to modify the corner panels the same as the other ones. I think easies way will just be to cut off the 30x30 angle do the mods and weld it back on. Will need to fill the 3mm gap in the edge but that shouldn't be too hard.

Also did we want to stick with the blue colour? And does anyone know how much it would cost to get large stickers printed?

With the roof are we using 30x30 RHS still or can we drop down to something smaller and lighter? Gotta work out how much steel we are going to need.

I guess these are a fair bit cheaper and easier to make/copy.

Pretty sure that's similar to what Daniel was working on. Just basically a Lebgth of rhs on to and bottom with bar in between. Also steel not Ali and with less fancy joints.

There should be a bit of a cleanup happening at the hackerspace next weekend.

If you guys wanna get some of your crap cleaned at the same time that should be eminently possible.
