Nichrome wire does work. problem is if it is too short it burns out and if its too long it doesn't get hot enough. I also noticed the cold butane will cool the wire down. Need to do some more testing.

Going from previous experience a spark works a lot better for lighting things than hot wire.

If you do it right it should also use a lot less power. It might be a tad heavier though.

If you can find one of those kids toys that uses a little abrasive wheel with a piece of flint it could work well with just a simple DC motor to drive it.

But solid state all the way IMHO, the less moving parts the better.

I also got a USB plasma globe and pulled it apart but it only has one wire leading up inside the globe and I'm not sure where to connect another wire to make a spark. I read on wikipedia that the globe needs 2- 5kV to run which sounds like a good little spark

Butane, eh?
I don't guess they let you use gasoline and petroleum jelly, huh?

13.2.1. Fuel must exit the robot and be ignited as a gas. It cannot leave the robot in a liquid or gelled form or use oxidizers.
13.2.2. Fuel types allowed are propane and butane, the maximum quantity allowed is 4 fl oz in robots up to 30 lbs, 8 fl oz for robots 60 lbs and above.

Yah, just messin' with ya.
Still, thanks for the HU on accelerants. I figured that sticky, napalm-like mixes were probably out so its good to know the guidelines.
Just out of interest, what are the rules on plasmas? They're neither liquid nor gel. Say you struck an arc and funneled it with a mag trumpet.

Provided you pump in O2 at the same time as butane or propane you could get a fairly hot flame, but i image the issue is aiming it to a weak point(no armour) than anything else.

I think you might have issues getting the fusion reactor on there in the first place to generate any meaningful amount of plasma

on oxidisers are allowed.

wrt plasma
its not such a daft idea.

Shorting 10Ah worth of lipo cell makes a pretty damn quick hole in things (ask me how i know)

Won't do much for the lipo cells though.

It would be novel.

Open circuit voltage on most plasma cutters is ~200V or so though, you might be able to get it down to ~30 or so by closing up the gaps and such. I can see some kind of magnetic attachment nozzle doohickey, that limplets onto the other bot then blasting plasma into it. (think plasma cutter with a magnet on the end)

nasty, and effective. You would only need like 10-20 seconds of arc time.

of course a sheet of MDF ablative armor and its all kinda moot ;->

Best idea if you wanted plasma would be to get a couple of super caps. the 5V 2500F (yes two and a half thousand Farads) kind.

Charge em up prior to the match, run your plasma weapon off that.
