Or this simple, premade device that does the job

I've extracted 30mm sparks with mine, lights deodorant spray fairly well.

That looks a bit overkill for a beetle Shocked with a 30mm spark you could the igniter as the weapon itself! The hand-held version I used has a much smaller spark but still lights a large gas torch and is very hackable.

LOL, you'd basically have to attach the wheels and controller to the Spark igniter!

Hey good discussion guys...well I gave the steel wool a go and it works a treat. I possitioned the wire in front of the can. Then connected up via a blue speed controller and when you hit the switch it glows red hot, then you hit the servo to spray.... and that sets it off perfect. The only problem is you need to let the steel wool get hot for about a second then hit it with the butane. If you do the butane first it freezes the wire and it wont heat up. The nichrome might work better.

This was just running off the 4cell lipo i use to drive the beetle.

Would it be possible to use the software for the hk controller to tell one of the metal switches on top of the hk controller to trigger the blue speedo/steel wool?

Thing with steel wool is that if it has a bit too much current applied to it or too long being as a resistive load, it tends to burn and break. Nichrome wire would definately work.

Yeah I used about 10 strands at once and they all glow. Pretty sure they would last through a round. But yeah they would eventually snap.

My advice would be to hook up some servos then have a play round with software. I know it could be done and I could probably work it out but I don't know how to off the top of my head.

My thoughts would be that you would set the knobs to be like an adjustable channel then you enable/disable them or maybe a mix with the switch.

So when you guys built your flame bots were you just shooting it straight out of the can or did you have a tube connected to keep the flames away from the can?

If you can find em, brass garden sprinkler nozzles are ideal for flame throwers.

The little tiny ones that are like 10mm diameter and designed to plug straight into a plastic hose.

Then build a flame holder like this. It does three things, directs the flame, makes it easier to light and also provides a thermal barrier to the rest of the bot.
