That would certainly be tempting! Having started out on drill motors, I never want to go back to them. The long-term savings of a more relaible part are hard to determine but real.

If you don't use a part right it'll never work, regardless of expense or build. Think about that, and demons 4 year old same motor/gearbox drills Wink

Ah yes, but Demon is a rare beast and has small wheels which wouldn't even stress an all plastic gearbox. It doesn't rely on pushing power at all. It relies on a hulkin' great disk and mostly one wheel on the ground at any one time.

Its also my favourite bot in Australia. Also isn't demon using a couple of 18v dewalt drill motors?

Just thinking about it, i could probably grab some different ratios too and have grooves for circlips cut into the shaft 1mm wide every 3mm

Aren't the drill gearboxes in Demon modified? They have lasted brilliantly, but doing the various mods we have developed takes skills and tools that new builders don't have. Perhaps we should list out all the options for Steve to reference?

Yes please list options on wiki then link here.

Anyway back on robot progress. Have modded tpy1-25s and will try them out sometime. I have some gearboxes which aren't quite standard drills but will do for some initial testing. Hoping that it will work fine with no magic smoke.

The battery. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=15454

$9.88

I just bought the equivalent one in a non B-grade cell so will see how it goes. Only things I need now are some drills.

Oh and red wheels are $4.87 IMO a lot for a crappy plastic wheel but as mounting them is like 30cents worth of washers can't really get anything cheaper.

Hmmm coming back to this again. I am wondering if < $100 is possible yet.

I am thinking wood + a PCB with relays and maybe even make it so it can be triggered by a wired controller to start with.

did that include servos, grub screws for modding the drills, and hose clamps for mounting them? or are we talking cable ties here?

No servos needed, didnt include grub screws though bulk order from UK is way to go there, plywood mounts with screws.

I'm wondering if you could use a attiny or equivalent to control the relays instead of using a cable system. would not add much cost. also the new wifi chip ESP8266 might work for a receiver using a smart phone as the controller. someone who knows what they are doing might be able to make a system that works for $15-20.

If your looking at a tethered version, you could use DPDT toggle switches instead of relays.

Idea with relays is that you could thhe power them with servos so you could upgrade to RC control.
