HK module in DX6.

So tonight I decided I would try and revitalise my good old DX6 with a HK module after some discussions with Angus. Aaron had also mentioned doing this previously as well.

The process was easier than I expected. You just take a HK radio, cut out the module which leaves you with 4 wires. Power, GND, Bind and PPM. Now HK as they have to be different invert the PPM signal.

To invert the signal I used a ULN2003 as it was all I had lying around. I took the PPM line from the spektrum fed it through a resistor into input 1 on the ULN2003. I hooked up output one to the hobbyking ppm line and added a resistor on the hobbyking board between the ppm input pin and the 3.3V regulator pin to pull it high. I also wired the ULN2003 gnd pin to ground.

The hobbyking power wire is unused. I soldered directly from the 3.3V specktrum regulator to the output on the spektrum module regulator. I thought about wiring directly to battery power as then I could disable the spektrum Tx module but I wasn't sure of the specs on the regulator. GND wire goes to GND and the bind wire goes to the bind button pin on the back of the spectrum TX board.

After wiring everything up it appears to work. I thought it didn't initially but turns out servo I was using to test was dead. Here is pictures and video proof.

Just retested bind functionality. Works fine. Spektrum is reassembled and visually unaltered.

Need to get a new battery then it will have a new lease on life.

Also it should work fine as spektrum or HK radio in the future.

so theres no connection to the antenna?
I wonder if it'd improve anything if it was.

Also this would have been handy to know about a while ago lol I wonder if it could make the dx6i's not suck ass.

I just have a little antenna on the actual module. It might be important if I was flying a plane but I have never had any issues with bots.

Simple, buy an AR6110E RX, instantly turns the DX6i into something useful.

EDIT:

Going to be doing a similar mod to mine soon, but I'll be wedging a DX4 radio inside a DX6 to give it DSM2 capabilities Cool

Whats the point of it? Does this let you use hobbyking and Spektrum gear off the one trasmitter? or just a fix for a dead spektrum? Smile

Lets you use the hobbyking receivers with the spektrum but you get all the yummy dx6 features ie you can use it without needing a PC to reverse a channel.... Shocked
