Well has been great fun past few days.
But I think this is almost good enough to say it is working.

Tweaked a few things since video to make starting a bit smoother.

Current status is a controller with proportional control and failsafe.
Next step is to set up a dev platform and test it. Then move on to different controllers.

So if anyone has a Plush 30A lying around and wants to try it the hex file is on launchpad.net/brushed .

Once I get it properly tested I will try and make a better video where I don't sound as bad on how to dissasemble, wire it up and program the controller.

Film the video, then do a voice over afterwards.
Can help with video editing if you need it.

So I made a robot. They work pretty well. I am driving with L/R reverse and sideways so I blame my poor driving on that. I think it would also help with expo rates.

Ah I stalled the motors but only using a 500mah 2S battery so don't think I can pull much more than maybe 2A through it. I need higher capacity and maybe 3S to see if I can make them fry. In any case what you see in the vid is a full ESC setup which is < $30 inc shipping.

Oh I tried a 4 Cell battery and stalled the common beetle motors. Motors got pretty smoky. Controllers got warm but not too hot to touch.

Now working on Plush10A for Ants/Beetles

Plush 10 has exactly the same programming port and int0 rc input. I dont have enough hands to check the fet gates. But looking at which pins they have taken I think so. Smile Makes life easy for me.

Also P fets on the Plush 10 are the same. There is only 1 of them N fets are 934 not n932 not sure what the difference is atm.

Pulled apart a $70 150A controller

6 x http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/184921/ONSEMI/NTMFS4833N.html on high and low channel.
Driven by IRF2101 high low fet driver.

Looks decent. No idea if it actually is. I would need to learn more about FETs

Conclusions .... I think we can probably enjoy cheap beetle and antweight controllers from this but I would not be advising anyone to celebrate about cheap feather controllers yet. I think there is some which could be useful but we may have to see a few ESC fires before they are usable to most people.

Not that we haven't seen ESC fires before, from commercial robot controllers.

Combat testing is the best way. i think if we built a feather with these unproven ESC's and got sad when they went up in smoke one would be being a bit foolish.

I'd certainly be game to try it myself!

Is there some sort of datalogger we can include in such a bot that will keep track of amps / volts / etc ?

HobbyKing has a few wattmeters available, one like the HobbyKing HK-010 Wattmeter

It's not a recording data logger, but you could still get some useful information from it during destruction testing.

Back on topic, I have photos of my $20 Mystery Pentium 80A BESC. It uses FDD-8896 Fets on a multi board setup.
