pssht. 80 kilo? You reckon you can't lift 80 kilo. Jaemus thats probably close to what you weigh. I reckon I can lift you. (Get a few drinks into me when we go camping and I probably will be ) Two people could move the arena, obviously the more people the easier it will be. _________________ Farnsworth - "I hate these nerds. Arena progress
All the mounting hardware arrived today:
Clockwise from top left:
levelling feet, good for 150Kg each
M8 bolts to secure the sides to the corner poles
self-tapping 10-24 screws to attach the polycarb to the walls
Drills for above
Weld nuts for the M8 bolts
washers for the M8 bolt heads
Weld nuts for the levelling feet
all that stuff is resting on the coloured plastic to make the arena display
After looking a the size of the weld nuts for the levelling feet, I don't think my little welder will cope, so after plates are cut out, I would really appreciate some help welding the nuts on.

NICEEEEEEEEEEEEE <3 mcmaster.
with the weld nuts yours would be fine - do yourself a favour and just weld a normal standard nut with two tacks to a piece of plate and see for yourself how obscenely hard it is to remove youll strip out the thread before the nut twists off. the welds only there to stop the nut rotating while the bolts torqued up

You mean like this?
I gave the nuts a bit of a pre-heat to make up for the workshop being freezing and they welded just fine - this is going to be easier than I thought

I had some 3mm sheet, so I made the adjustable feet for the corner posts:
There is a nut on both sides for extra strength and to give the foot some self-locking ability.
I haven't been able to take time off work to get all the steel tube yet. Perhaps the best idea is to drop by Edcon at Blacktown next Saturday?

Yeah, really liking this new welder! I started filling in the order forms and once the steel arrives, you should start seeing some real progress before the end of the month.
BTW: does anyone have spray painting gear? The frame would look much better with a smooth coat of paint...

For something of that size it's probably easiest just to spray can it.
I recommend the Rust Guard paint, even though it takes forever to dry.
It's pretty hard wearing after a few days of drying time. _________________ The Engine Whisperer

I had a long chat with Dave 'Dave's Hubs' Wiley, who built that aluminium arena that was featured a few pages back. He thinks that 3mm polycarb walls are too thin; apparently there have been a few incidents where beetles have cut substantial holes right thru the inner 3mm wall. That wouldn't be nice it some kid had his nose pressed up against the wall, so I'm thinking that we should make the the inner protective strip thicker & taller - maybe 6mm by 200mm. If a beetle can cut thru that, its on it's way to world domination!

I think if we have a double wall we should be ok, the inner can be pretty much anything cheap and replaceable. Once something has hit the wall, any spinning KE is going to become KE in the whole bot and that shouldn't punch any holes in anything.
Also people shouldn't be touching the walls of the arena anyway, I have an electric fence controller someplace, should fix the problem. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
