Hmm, at $100 per full membership and some student / part-time memberships, we would have enough for a concrete floor AND some extras like a tabletop arena / new lights / other facilities.

I've always had tonnes of small bot parts, guarantee a 1kg robot from me if we get a tabletop arena. (heck, a big slab of 12mm MDF would be enough...) Smile

Yeah, I still have 80% of the parts for a beetleweight. If we do a tabletop, I would really like to see something professional, sturdy, and transportable. We might not do many off-site demos, but a dodgy arena shouldn't be the limiting factor.

I couldnt have said it better myself (and didnt, despite using lots of words!)

Maybe Chris's MDF floor if not used for the main arena can donate itself to the small arena, forming the floor, side walls, and any other structural needs, then Nick's steel laid on top, lick of paint, more of that black/yellow striped tape and BAM there's your professional looking arena

Underneath can be supported by say, if not sawhorses, maybe one of the Bunnings folding metal leg setups?

What size arena is recommended for the beetle and antweight classes?

It seems that most small arenas are built to fit whatever the materials will allow - not what the bots or builder would ultimately like! In our case, we could do two steel panels for the floor and cut 3 panels in half for the sides. It would be even better if we had enough panels to go full hight sides so that vertical spinners had more room to throw opponents. The supports could be relatively low folding saw horses and the only major expense would be a sheet of polycarb for the top.

Yes indeed, I forgot about the polycarb - tho it's only necessary once someone builds a spinner.

depending on size a few sheets of the 3mm stuff from bunnings would suffice, wouldnt cost any more than 100 bucks or something to do a fair size arena

so long as battleshed is in the holidays it should be fine, there are always reserves for sport teams so something can be easily organised in the event of a clash. besides, most students who would build a bot would be in a $h*t team anyway so it's not really a problem Laughing . I reckon the 1kg class would do well, It's probably more atractive to new builders.
