NSW season 6 2009

NSW season 6 2009

Season 5 is over and its now time to plan for the next big year of robotic mayhem; here are some changes I'd like to propose:

1) Lightweights, this time for real! We keep talking about it, next year I think we can get enough to run a few events.

2) Reduce the number of events to six per year. Let's face it, not many other competitors in the world go to 8 local events and one or two larger national events. Running 6 local events and perhaps two optional events for lightweights only will reduce the expense and effort we have to put in, allowing better built bots. People didn't like the idea of just 3 to 4 events last year, so six is a good starting point.

3) Arena repairs - it can't be put off, as the floor is in really bad shape. Steel is a bit too expensive, so Jake & Russel's ideas for chipboard sound like the answer.

4) More build days, possibly incorporating non-combat bots, driving practise and venue maintenance.

Just to put the dates on the front page
April 18th (school holidays)

June 6th

July 18th (school holidays)

August 29th

October 10th Battleshed (school holidays)

November 21st

=========================

6 events sounds good
Perhaps 4 "build days"?
I think the build days should be at a workshop though rather than the arena, there just isn't anything there to do build stuff with. Perhaps a "skill share" type event, fiberglassing, welding, machining etc.

I know Russell is happy for people to come over, I'm pretty sure Chris is as well.

Unfortunatly it looks like MDF/yellow tongue is probably the only floor we can afford, I had a plan to sheathe MDF tiles with steel but it still winds up at ~$1000-2000.

Re lightweights, I think the consensus was something along the lines of "spinning weapons limited to half the KE of Plan-B"
I'll work out a number for that later, basically means any saw or grinder is fine and you could still have spinning stuff, but unless your made out of foil its not going to bother you too much.

Who has access to a suitable workshop? Nicks is great, but a bit small, as are most of ours i'd imagine...
I would like to make a lightweight, funds and time are needed though, hmm need a team member. Smile
EDIT: Just had an idea... if we got a lot of these cheap nicads in... it would be a pretty good start. Very Happy 6000mah is easy enough for a non spinner lightweight. They're a bit large, but oh well...

Perhaps we can have something like "Practise" day at jeff's place and smaller build days with Russel, Chris and me, which are focused on particular activities like welding, milling, etc.

A build / practise day makes sense - next week is rather short notice for everyone, how about the 10th?

<farnsworth> good news everbody </farnsworth>

Just got off the phone with a person who is organising a robotwars competition at the university of Sydney.

Last year they had 8 teams of engineers (who managed to make 4 working robots ;-P), all kitted out with spectrums and scorpions. They are interested in joining a "real" robot wars comp this year and the organiser would like to see a few bots and the arena etc.

Currently I'm hoping we can have a bit of a "show and shine" next sunday
(25th) With a few bots at the arena, no actual battling (perhaps some shoving and demo smashing up of old crap?)
If you can't attend but could "loan" your bot it'd be good as well.

Real engineers, you say! That could be very promising and we should definitely make every effort for next Sunday. Scissorhands is in pieces for upgrades but I can either bring it as-is or I might be able to put it back together well enough to destroy an old PC or two. I

We can use the occasion to finalise the event dates for this year, talk about lightweights, etc. from what I hear so far, we might also be admiring the Robowars trophy Razz

I dunno if there will be any others in attendance or just the organiser there, If we can get a bit of a response then she might be able to drum up a few others perhaps.

orbit is banged up to hell (damn drive motor and loose wire costing me my matches against IG and Bender) but even if the frame damamged it still works good enough to drive around and smash a few things up so ill be there definitely

Any single females among them Jake? Very Happy

Cool! Sounds like at least 3 or 4 bots can turn up, plenty for a demo. I will poke around work for old printers & PCs.

Jake : Can you organise a time when the Uni people can get there?
