not as cheap as A123s, or supply as much constant current, but still might be worth a look.

http://evpower.com.au/-DIY-Small-LiFePO4-Battery-packs-.html

They are available in 10Ah and 20Ah packs and appear to be able to be charged with existing A123 chargers (same fully charged voltage)

What is the length of life for a M1 and other Li batteries in robots? That is, number of recharges or months.

Our XP.Well we finished up with 2 dead as in throw away LiPo packs, a 3 and a 6 cell pack at IF, only cheap ones but still cost more than these ebay M1’s. We have only lost a couple of M1 cells ever. None at IF.

My opinion M1’s more reliable but if you need more amp hours or desperate to save weight LiPo’s have advantages but the only reason we tried them was it looked like M1’s drying up or getting very expensive.

At $10 AU or less per cell we will be staying with M1’s unless good LiPo’s get a lot cheaper.

How long do M1’s last in combat bots? Longer than anything else we’ve tried.

lipolys seem to die fast if you abuse them (high discharges etc) they also have a shelf life of around a year. IE after a year of sitting there they are toast.

Couple of new players in the A123 game. There are others to that I haven’t commented on. No sign of them drying up yet.

Discharged my 1 yr old A123 packs today. Found the 4 cell pack only had 1570mA in it Mad I suspect it is only one cell that is damaged and that one has a small dent in it and got a bit warm (melted the heatshrink) after the dumbell fight at last years Battleshed. The 3 cell pack that was connected in series with it has a capacity of 2170mA. I'll start cycling the cells in the 4 pack individually and see if it has damaged any of the other cells.
These cells are from Robot Market Place and have only really been used on the 100W scooter motors.
