Sticky Relays

Hi Guys
Greetings from pommy land !
After chatting to Brett this morning about axe control relays he mentioned about the problems team rowtang had with sticky relays and said that they had come up with a solution to this problem. As i am also building an axe bot i wonder if they could inform me as to the way they got around this sticky little problem before i have to encounter it..... Smile

Cheers Froggy UK

You can either use capacitors over the contacts, or fast acting diodes.

Frag and IG Both bots loose drive to one side early in fight. Frag’s weapon deliberately held on in berserker mode to get around.

Brett mentioned that you are running a 250 watt geared motor same as Fragmentor our featherweight hammer bot. I really like these motors but there regen current can be a problem.

After trying a couple of other brands of relays these are the best we have found. We use 2 in the normal H Bridge

We also use TVS diodes and capacitors across motor leads and we only use 20 CP2400 in Frag. He might take more volts but we haven’t felt like trying.
We also run a 50-amp circuit breaker to protect the motor just in case.

As Frag’s weapon can spin 360 without hitting itself we haven’t worried about any position sensing and auto turn off.
Also Frag’s hammer is his self-righting mechanism so reducing the power on the back swing is undesirable.
The body slam is also one of his signature moves. Smile

It sounds like the design of your bot is closer to Daniel’s bot Avenger

By all means try the simple relay method, I will be interested to see haw it works but a proper EMC might be desirable. Problem there is we have blown motor controllers with these motors in our bots that use them as drives. We haven’t tried them with any IFI controllers.

That setup seems very familar. I hope the axe weighs about 1.25kg. Its fun with that much weight.
