I have been thinking about an electric ride on mower. I think 3 kW for the deck and 1 kW for the drive should do it. I currently have a 17 Hp Greenfield. I could set up a wind generator and it would be quite green.

yeah I was talking to my dad the other week about an electric ride on mower.
It'd be a pretty ideal use since they spend most of their time just sitting around, so you can charge it with solar or wind power quite easily - and weight isn't a major concern, so you don't have to get too high tech with the batteries.

For the money, I'd use two Eteks on a mower, preferably one brushless (the drive one - which you can run at limited power to save battery drain) and one brushed - for the cutting deck.
A simple resistor and contactor for a soft start would be all the speed control it needs.

I can't be bothered getting a bike license again, let alone talking Deb into letting me have anything resembling a motor bike. I would probably get away with a scooter or push bike conversion though.

I was looking at something more modest, like a scooter with a bunch of A123 packs and a Perm 80 or MAG C40 motor.

Along those lines, has anyone thought about charging a large number of parallel A123 batteries? The simple option seems to be to leave the packs assembled and use the dewalt chargers, but I would like to build the cells into a force cooled single pack and run it as a 10s5p configuration or larger.

i reckon 2x of the massive axi motors would do good for a scooter. a guy on a hobby forum made a razor scooter with one motor and it was pretty darn fast! at least 40k max speed. ill have to dig up the video.

I wouldn't mind some more info on that, although the controllers might end up rather expensive. I like the option of using a Mag shaped motor and a bevel gearbox (like Jolt's only lighter) so I can hide the motor under the scooter deck - if the large motor can't be seen, who's to know it's putting out 4HP?

they are all illegal as far as the RTA is concerned so I wouldn't worry too much about trying to "stealth" it ;->

Aren't electric scooters up to 250W classified as toys with no restrictions? Scooters like this:



are a bit obvious; sticking a long skinny motor under the deck would, as you say, 'stealth' it.

only push-bikes (as in with pedals) have the 250W exemption.

Everything else is off limits in public areas.
But since we are all only going to use them on the track what's the problem ;->

A mag with a 200W sticker on it would do wonders on a push bike though me thinks. Hrm actually that also means it needs not be registered etc, that might be a decent personal transporter for doing the shopping ;->
A brushless AXI or something is smaller than a 200W scooter motor too.

Whatever the case we would be better than my bogan neighbours kid. We kept hearing this 2 stroke bike but there was always this weird sound like a chain was grinding on something. Anyway a few days later I see him riding this thing around, its a full sized dirt bike but he is riding it with no back tire. IE running on the rim. Saw it being carted off in a trailer yesterday, can't say I'm sad to see it go.
