Response to Insurance question from VMAA

Hello Murry

My name is Mark Buchanan
I have been for some time hosting what has become a very popular Indoor RC
Helicopter event

last event had 22 pilots and approx 15 spectators for a 3 hour session on 2
Indoor basketball courts

The ratio of insured pilots is about 40% and thus our event is not endorsed
by MAAA or vmaa

Most of these guys fly very small helicopters that simply arnt suitable for
outdoor conditions, thus they have no desire or need to join a club
also they in some cases arnt incredibly well off financially and its a lot
just to keep their helicopter flying let alone the burden of an annual fee
which they see as excessive

for the record i am financial and a member of MARCS in Laverton VIC

Is there any chance that at the next annual meeting the possibility of
specialized indoor policies could be raised and discussed ?
I would be happy to attend

my thoughts are that a policiy that was only valid for indoor use and doesnt
require the holder to join a particular club would be well received (one
would assume it would be much cheaper)
They want to be insured, I as an organizer would like to reduce my
liability, so what we need to do here is recognize that they exist,
recognize that they dont wish to join a club and provide them with an option
that is financially viable.

Mark

Thanks for your interest and inquiry.
You are not alone in your request in fact it has been asked several times.
Our insurance is purchased in bulk and divided among the membership. It
comprises member to member, directors and public liability insurance, so the
insurance cost is fixed irrespective of where and what you fly .
I guess similar arguments could be put for other aspects of the sport.
We have been told at one of the MAAA conferences that if at a venue there
are MAAA members (and therefore insured) and there are also non insured
members the MAAA members should not participate as in the event. I've also
been told that to have different premiums for various classes would be an
administrative nightmare.
Indoor flying is covered in two of the MAAA manuals of procedure.
I will pass on you request to the committee for discussion at our next
meeting
I can understand your concerns as I too fly indoor with both Heli's and
foamies and they seem "harmless" but don't be fooled they can hurt.

The total MAAA / VMAA is $109.00 maybe you could form your own
"indoor club " with a small club fee then you could satisfy everyone

If I can be of any assistance please contact me again

Regards
Murray Ellis
Pres VMAA

i now hand the topic over to Brett Laughing Laughing Laughing

Translated:

Lots of people have asked - The answer is NO, you have to pay the same amount whether you fly a PicooZ in a private room or a 1/4 scale Jumbo jet at an airport. We are in charge of ALL flying toys regardless of size.

If you're a good insured boy, you wont fly at any of those naughty uninsured events that arent approved of by us. In fact, if any "unapproved people" start flying, you should leave.

There are manuals and proceedures to be followed you know, and we will discuss them at our authorised ruling body and get back to you as to our decision.

Dont be fooled, those little Helis can hurt you too, play safe, pay our fee and join our association - support us - then you'll be covered and nothing bad will happen to your house and money. except for our little fees of course, but we're worth it - you wouldnt want anything nasty to happen now would you ?

Please feel free to get in touch with us when you decide to "do the right thing"

All your base are belong to us.

And people wonder why I dont like "Associations" Rolling Eyes

The stuff in my house would be of no interest to a thief.

I have no big-$ items that are easy to sell.. just a pile of electronic odds and ends that individually are worth very little and wouldnt be of any use to 99% of the population anyway.

The only thing that I would consider a threat to my belongings would be a major fire, and Mel is here 95% of the time, so thats very unlikely and not worth worrying too much about that I need to pay someone to protect me against it.

House/Contents Insurance is needed when you want to pile up a lot of $-valuable material belongings/assets in one place and leave them unattended - the more expensive posessions you accumulate, the harder you need to work to protect and keep them.

The *really* valuable things in life cant be insured unless you think money payouts are going to compensate for loss of an eye/health, friends or loved one.

I think my anti-insurance opinions might be so because I dont really value material things that highly - its a philosophical viewpoint - You can always get more money and buy more stuff tomorrow if you need it, but I could never buy another love like my Lady Mel's.. the most truly* valuable thing in my life. (cue gushy music Smile )

I was wondering if the RC plains and helicopters are already covered under the owners home contents insurance and therefore has public liability cover.

So if my car is covered under my shed's content insurance, if I decided to have a head on with a truck for shits and giggles, my CTP and damages are covered by my shed's content insurance? Laughing

I still don't see how that can cover your ass...

IMO there is little more important to the value of a man than how he respects his significant other./OT

@Aaron, I see the smiley and get that you were taking the piss, but for those who are interested, a registered vehicle is not home contents and a deliberate act is not an accident.

Cut and paste from Suncorp product disclosure statement page 18.

‘Contents’ means your unfixed household
goods and valuables and personal effects
that you own including:.............
remote-control, model or toy:
• motor vehicles
• aircraft (with a wingspan up to
1.5 metres)

page 32

16(b) Legal Liability cover when you insure
your Contents under your policy
When you insure your Contents under your
policy we cover:
your legal liability to pay compensation for
an incident which causes death or bodily
injury to other people or loss or damage
to their property
which happens anywhere in:
Australia or
New Zealand.

You should talk to your own insurance provider and find out what they cover. Don't make any decisions based on anything I say as I a not an expert.

i dont insure my big zx12r (300kph motorbike) (its insured for 3rd party)

to get full comp it cost around $1100 per year, the market value of the bike is about $7000
The personal value to me is a lot more again

so ive never had fullcomp on it as i believe paying One 7th of the bikes value is just wrong

wrong wrong wrong

Razz

i completely hear and understand what you are saying brett and have all along
were gonna fly regardless, i just thought that if i could get an indoor specific policy for cheap $50 or whatever, it would make me feel a little more at ease

no accident has ever happened and nor may any happen, you would think that would make us a good risk to insure.

cheers all

Off topic to the original post, but more in response to Brett's post.

I think home insurance is pretty useful, I live on the top floor of an apartment block, so its pretty secure, along with the fact that is was such a pain to carry things up here, I think I am pretty unlikley to get robbed. Fire is probably the only real risk. Now I am like Brett, I have a million bits and peices that have no large value, in fact the most expensive things in my house are my fridge and bed, both bought new very recently.

However, suppose there was a fire, or someone did come try and rob me and damaged things as they often seem to. If you add up all the little things to replace suddenly it could cost a lot. When I moved in I rang up AAMI to get a quote on renters insurance, it costs me $100 a year to have $25,000 of fire and theft cover. It was super easy, I rang them up, gave them my credit card details, and I was done.

Considering if there was a fire then it would be at least $15,000 to replace things like fridge, tables, chairs, cupboards, paintings, computers, desks, shelves, appliances, TV, stereo, bed, balh blah blah $100 is not a lot. Even if someone breaks in and just steals my TV, DVD player and computer, I get a new one, $100 well spent.

Anyway, this might not work for different situations, but $100 a year is well spent knowing that if something happenes to my stuff I can get it all replaced at no costs to me.

That particular motor vehicle come under the heading of remote control toy. That is, a remote control toy motor vehicle.

You need to check your own policy to make sure what it covers. For those living with their parents, you should check your parents policy. Get your own expert advice and then decide based on that. Here is the Suncorp PDS http://www.suncorp.com.au/suncorp/img/assets/3635/home_insurance_pds.pdf from which the above is copied.

IMO the importance of home contents insurance is mainly the public liability insurance. Imagine if your household contents caused serious injury or death to a person and you were sued. For example, running someone over with a surfboard and breaking someones neck. That would bankrupt an individual without insurance.

These are my own opinions. People need to make their own informed choices. Do not base any choice you make on anything I say. Seek professional advice.
