One thing that might be worth while adding to ant arena Nick is something to hold doors up or down. Some spring door hinges would do it. (People have been asking what happened to my face all day)

Vid looks good.

wrt high speed
i dunno i found the noise oddly soothing, certainly better than anything from kanye.

wrt ant arena
Stick it out in the open somewhere, the pits have alot of stuff in them that isn't places for people to watch. Also next time arrange for there to be an open for it to be in ;->

still a learning experience, much was learn't by all.

Speaking of, looking for ways to publicise the draw/results etc.
Would a web page accessible via either the interweb or a wifi LAN be sufficient for most people?
Perhaps combined with a "public" laptop, not for the audience but for pit crew.

A novel idea, but a more available view for everyone is whiteboard/big screen fixed display.

There are times when technologically innovative solutions can speed things up, but this will just add one more thing to not work.

True - if we have a big display, we should aim to use it for everything.

Great event, finally good to get our states first public event over with and it went smooth enough! Good times had by all so well done Angus et al.

Good to catch up with everyone interstate and meet some new faces Smile Looking fowards to the next one after a sizable rest haha!

Time to go through the 4gb of videos. Would anyone object to some highlights or do you want the entire (poorly filmed) things posted? 4gb of uploads will hammer my net for sure Razz

Cheers for the vids, keep em coming guys they look great! Very Happy

Ok now i've had a bit of time to recover here it is:

Detailed Post-Event Report

Basically for robot serial killers I threw down the gauntlet, we've been suffering a bit as event frequency and interest dwindled (with robowars no longer taking place), so I took it upon myself to get a much needed beetleweight arena together and host a public event. Needless to say anyone who were there Sunday knows it was a pretty huge success!

I got heaps of help on the Saturday and Sunday assembling the arena and cleaning up after, but if we want this kind of event to happen again i'll need some serious assistance. It was just too much work over the last few months and I had to cull many things that would have made the event even better.

The club is now armed with some proper gear we should really have had ages ago, including a proper C02 extinguisher, and metal bucket for ants or lipo's if they go off.

The pozible funding helped this thing take place however isn't really correct for registering, perhaps if there was another system in place to go along side of it, but for me trying to collate everyone's info was just too much work, especially with it all mostly coming in a few days before XD. Maybe we can use buildersdb?

Also, the rewards side of things got a little bit messy, during the day I tried to let VIP people know they could drive the bots/ come into the pits but I think we only had one tell us? There was 6 or so.

The venue was pretty damn good and Pia was really accommodating, but it was PACKED. Not too sure what we could do about that, it really was just a bit small with the layout we had.

I dodged a bullet by having this event sans insurance, and that won't be happening again. Those stupid kids were getting way too close and along with better safety barriers we really need it for next time.

The beetle arena has much potential, but it needs somewhere to live... It packs down really quite small but needs to go somewhere where it wont rust to pieces and the poly wont get damaged... Largest parts are the four floor tiles, 1200 x 1200 x 18mm. I can't use my workshop till it's somewhere else lol...

So yeah, where to from here? We want to have another event soonish which is in discussion, I'm easy to what classes we want to run.

Some press from this event:

We've made an impact, now we have to follow through!

I have a lead on a good data projector with 1280 x 800 resolution and a bright 3500 Lumens output. Not sure when I will actually lay hands on it but definitely this year. I am fairly competent with Powerpoint so I want to develop some templates to make a canned presentation that explains the event format, the basic judging rules and photos of the bots between rounds. While matches are running, it might be possible to run live video for people at the back of the crowd and we should find a way to show the running scores for the bots without too much typing from Jake's Battleputer.

Any ideas on content are very welcome - I can't recall any events having something like this so we would be world leaders and setting standards - I'd like them to high standards Smile

for a first event this was huge, the crowds were immense and to the point where if we do this again im sure that place wont hold the crowds we draw

heck on facebook i went to a few different pages and all had links to the event linked off some website labelled "what to do in sydney" or something

was awesome

but yeah well done Angus, next ones gonna be crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I'll give upgrading the battle puter a go.

Make it more user friendly for running stuff and also make some kinds of pretty front end to go onto the projector.

if anybody has ideas on how to present the data it'd be good. I'm thinking of playing with python 3d graphics stuff just for the giggles ;->

(note this would be a presentation only module, not needed for the battleputer management functions)
