The design is getting incredibly compact - excellent work. When the bot is inverted, those weapon motors are going to be very exposed to other bots.

Thx Nick.

Yeah I agree, the angle the bot will be resting on is quite different from that of Contraption. That leaves the weapon motors more vulnerable when upside down. What sort of armor do you think might be useful and how to attach the armor? (I found attaching additional armor onto this sort of design to be kinda difficult, except just gluing the armor onto the chassis.)

A few armor types I have thought of: 3D printed "bridge" over the weapon motors, and either glue or screw them onto the top cover. This is largely inspired by Angus's printed gears, which held up reasonably well.

HDPE/PC panels glued or screwed onto the front plates (the vertical plates right behind the hinged wedges)

I doubt that printed armour will stand up to even one hit from regular featherweights; I'd go with the thickest possible HDPE

OK I see... Thx for the info.

I wonder between screwing into HDPE and using low surface energy tape, which way do you think will let the armor fall off easier? (I think I will probably mount the extra armor on the top plate, but if the bond between them is too strong the entire cover can get ripped off in one hit.)

The tape works much better if there is a large surface area. If you attach it to the top plate, any impact force will go into the top plate, potentially cracking it.

Sorry about the top plate part, as soon as I turned the model around I realized that if I was to attach armor to the top plate the armor needs to be ridiculously tall to cover the motor, which is kinda impractical. (I guess things will work out when I stop assuming things XD)

When it's upside down it should look more like this.

I am now thinking about adding armor to the weapon mounts, but that will leave the far end of the armor unsupported...

A different option is to make the bot self-righting with the weapon. If you make the tops of the motor mounting arms a bit shorter so that the body of the disk doesn't touch the floor but the tooth does, then its possible for the bot to flip itself back over. That doesn't always work but I have seen it in action.

I guess that works. Thx Nick.

Also when I was looking at the robot upside down, I found that the center of mass is so high that I might have a secondary way of self-righting: if I go full reverse and then full forward, the inertia of the robot going backward, combined with the torque from the wheels going forward might be able to turn itself over to the right side.

So after watching the FMB event this weekend on livestream I had a new idea for a drum bot. I don't even know what my next bot is going to be.

Zero excuses - we want to see some CAD Laughing I have been busy trying to design a new drum spinner and I have to say its hard to get the weight of the drum down to what the beater in Mr Mangle weighs.

Yep it's extremely hard to design a drum with the same overall size as an eggbeater to be even close to the same weight unless you go for an aluminum drum. I would say that having a shorter/narrower drum would work.

As for the CAD, unfortunately with my final exams coming in like a week I can't do much about it, but do expect some early drawing mid to late Nov.

Btw where did your undercutter go?

Good luck with the exams! The under cutter is slowly taking shape - I made some test parts and with two more parts I can run a test spin up.

At the moment, I am trying to start a home manufacturing business and like usual, funds are tight so I am putting in 'sweat equity' with lots of work, not leaving much time for bots.

Oh and I forgot to mention the hollow steel drums, like the ones on the new Black Panther. (or is a panther automatically black? Idk but it's just a name translation.) Those drums might be as light as an eggbeater but through three days of matches I've seen at least four broken drums.

Good point; thin wall steel drums have some of the highest MOIs vs weight of all rotating weapons - right up until they hit another spinner Smile.
