Robowars will be back at Vivid again this year and we hope to see you and your robots there.
The event will be on Sunday the 11th June with four rounds running from 2pm - 10pm. Once again it will be held right in the heart of Sydney CBD at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
Registration
Registration will be handled through BuidlersDB: http://www.buildersdb.com/view_bots.asp?eventid=465
Currently 12 of the 24 spot are already filled. If we fill them I may look at extending to 32 but I really want to make sure everyone gets at least 4 fights so will see how I can shuffle the schedule.
Spectators/Tickets
As always this will be a ticketed event. (I will hopefully break even again this year)
Tickets on sale https://www.vividsydney.com/event/ideas/robowars
If you aren’t building and want to support the event please come watch. We try to make it the best experience we can for both builders and spectators and your support means we can continue to do this every year.
Accommodation, Parking & Flights
While I don’t have any specific recommendations keep in mind you will be expected to be at the venue for weigh in @ rego from 11am and the event finishes late 10-11pm. This does mean that you are outside the hours of most of the road closures so can park in the CBD but would strongly suggest pre-booking.
I would also suggest looking for something close by sooner rather than later. It is the middle of Vivid and things will sell out quickly.
It is possible to fly in on the morning of the event and fly out the morning after. (again suggest booking now) If you do fly in you can get the train directly to Circular Quay and walk 200m to event.
I've registered two bots, but will go back to one if you need more slots.

I also have 3 bots registered but I am happy to bring fewer if registration fills up and you want more diversity.

I have a "bot" registered, I have a hammer bot design complete and ready to machine BUT I will probably put the design aside for now as I have less time than expected so may be bringing a less complicated robot( ie probably just a saw). I will be picking up all the parts when I go to Texas a week from now and will begin construction the following week( there are going to be long nights at the CNC).
Any problem using a 250mm saw blade which has a few broken teeth? Not sure if this counts as a modification or not.
Similarly is modifying the hub of the blade to attach a sprocket or pulley considered reasonable.

Expect your saw blade to 'self modify' in the arena . My saw blade had all the teeth knocked off by the 2nd fight so a spare or two is in order. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Any particular recommendation on types of blades, I have an expensive fine tooth aluminium cutting one with missing teeth, but I'm thinking that larger teeth will be better as once the TCT go it will basically just be a round disk. Looks like there are plenty of exposed/poorly protected wheels from the photos.

All TCT blades will lose their teeth very quickly, it doesn't matter how many teeth or what shape they are. Once the teeth are gone, the relatively soft steel supporting them rounds over and you are basically rubbing the saw against your opponent.
The best blade would be an old-school HSS blade for ripping wood - they have fewer, larger teeth that can be resharpened with a Dremel. I looked around for a cold cut-off saw blade but they are expensive and too large for the rules. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

I recall seeing dates announced for the nationals earlier this week but now can't find the post. Was I imagining it?

In my round timing I don't think we will be able to increase this much about 24. I am going for 9 fights in a 90min round which means 3 fights per robot across comp. Probably a few extra fights at the end.
Ideally I would like 24 robots + 3/4 reserves/fillers as people always drop out.
If you havent registered. Do so now so I can sure up these numbers. _________________ Steven Martin
