it's ok, they are over the weight limit. _________________ The Engine Whisperer

Hey Steve, is there any guide about how 'off road' the arena might be? Are we talking smoothish grass or rocks and ditches with water? _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

I always wanted an excuse to use this type of 'wheel':
I don't know what those things are officially called, but they look like they could be made very tough. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

This will be easier than building a featherweight for me. Got a stack of old power chairs at work I can mod.
So off road arena and usual weapons etc _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

Looks at pile of scrap metal in the garage
Soooo, what would be the cheapest/easiest drive motor/ESC option for a scrapheap heavyweight? Finding an old electric wheelchair or mobility scooter from somewhere? Asking for a friend ...

Your friend should definitely look at wheelchair motors . There are no really cheap options for heavyweight ESCs; even the cheapest ones are quite spendy.
Some of the possible ESCs are:
Vyper 120A single channel - probably better with 4WD and lower powered motors
RoboteQ 150 to 300A - they have some absolute beasts at beastly prices
IFI Victor 120A - similar to the Vyper but hard to find nowadays
IFI Victor BB 300A - very compact for the current rating and better bang for the buck compared to the RoboteQ controllers. These would be my personal pick for larger HW drive motors.
If your friend finds some four pole motors it might be possible to drive them with two TZ85a ESCs. As there are two separate circuits in a four pole motor, its fine to use a pair of ESCs on the one motor. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

The TZ85A has a place on the board for a fourth set of parallel MOSFETs. i might consider taking the unused FETs off the third channel of a BotBitz-configured TZ85A and putting them into the main outputs to make a TZ113A. Looks like a kind of painful SMD rework job though. You have to pull the two boards apart and then stick them back together afterwards.
