Workshop progress:

The floor is finally painted; what an effort!

Its painted with Rustoleum RockSolid epoxy paint and I really can't recommend it. The epoxy is quite runny in the pot but once its on the floor it is insanely hard to spread it in an even coat. It also doesn't cover up marks in the concrete unless its coated really thickly, which means the paint doesn't cover as many sq. metres as claimed. It might look better when its dry but I will likely have to give it another coat.

Its better than bare concrete, but up close in person, the finish is pretty crap. I used cheaper Jet Dry concrete paint last time I did a floor and it was easy & looked fine. For 4X the cost, I was hoping for better from this epoxy.

ROFL! Now I have to paint on some snowflakes - even painted snowflakes stand a chance of melting in our summer weather. The epoxy will be hard enough to walk on in a few hours so I can check out the finish and decide whether to re-coat it or not.

New year = moving in day

The floor is dry enough for light traffic and I got the first two shelves installed. The floor finish is very glossy but also very uneven - its not great but its good enough for a workshop. Once the coating has hardened (probably tomorrow), some of the machinery can be wheeled in and I can start bringing back stuff from the storage space.

Yep, that's my plan - keep the floor covered with equipment and sawdust so nobody can see it. Its going to take a while to move all the gear - first I get all the small stuff and shelves, then the crane truck for the heavy gear, then more trips in the van for anything trapped behind the heavy gear. Then a hernia operation Laughing.

In 2 to 3 weeks - one of the priority jobs is making a mobile base for it with levelling feet so it can be wheeled into the shed. At 650Kg, its going to be an 'interesting' installation.

More moving in:

Stuf is starting to come back from storage So. Much. Stuff. So far, I only moved a small part of the garage and half of a shelving unit at the storage space and the new workshop is already looking busy!

Here is the closest thing to a possum that we will see in the workshop for a while:

Thanks Ellis - that means a lot coming from you!

Good news:
I found all the missing bot parts and the transmitter Very Happy. They were very well buried in a box that was itself well buried at the storage unit. I have been making at least one trip to the storage every day this week and much or the small stuff is back home.

Bad news:
The LED tube lights I ordered a month ago are a total rip-off. The company was de-registered a day after the order was placed and I also found that the lights failed certification and pose an electrocution risk Shocked.

Emails are not being answered but at least the order was paid with Paypal, so I should eventually get the money back. Lesson learnt; never order from a store that doesn't have it's address and full contact details published on-line.

Sidetracked:

While bringing back boxes from storage, I found these goodies:

Its hard to believe Glen never put them together; after watching this:

and this:

I definitely need to put something together - one day! An electric drift trike looks much easier to build and probably a bit more fun too.

Rain interrupts play:

Its pissing down in Sydney and the next few loads of gear are all very rustable - vices, mill parts etc. so I am finding other stuff to do in the shed. One thing on the to-do list is this:

After investigating lasers for several weeks, I am ordering a 100W 900 x600mm model. Its quite a risky investment and will definitely need tuning and upgrades, but will ultimately be worth it. The next step up in quality is more than twice the price (and the hassle of importing it), while a name brand laser is just out of the question.

Between a laser, a CNC mill and a 3D printer, I should be able to prototype virtually any robot parts and make most things in-house. Very Happy
