I prefer the 30:1 gearmotors too - they are three times faster than that high speed servo. On the other hand, the servos are cheap and I like the enclosed case. The perfect ant drive motor would be the gear motor in a tough plastic shell that helped support the output shaft and kept dirt out of the gears.

Santa, are you listening?

Antweight progress:

The ant has been downsized a bit further, this time I took 15mm off the width:

That is a 24% size reduction and saves a serious amount of weight from the frame and the drum. The savings should allow for some titanium cladding or better teeth on the drum.

The 3D printed drum is just for sizing but its giving me ideas about the finished item; its not so hard to make the drum from 7075 round bar, which would be stronger and probably lighter than a stock size of tube. Its making a strong case for a 4th axis on the CNC mill.

Its definitely time for a more original name; I'm thinking of Combatant or Militant depending on what's already been used.

Grrrr!

Some UK builder has already taken my top choices for the antweight: http://www.antweightwars.co.uk/Antweight.htm . The next pick on the list is Dominant and for good measure I am stealing all Peter's great antweight design ideas Laughing

The Nanoweight robots are really awesome, I had no idea that a 25g weight category existed.

Workshop bling

I added a heap of storage space and a bit of class to the workshop today:

The steel fronts on the kitchen cabinets will take more of a beating than the regular melamine and should make the place look smarter. Now I can either be welding a killer bot or whipping up a cake in the same space Laughing

Shed progress:

This is the cleanest and neatest the shed will ever be:

Its like my own piece of the matrix, just waiting to get filled. Laughing

Now the floor has been etched and pressure cleaned, it will dry really fast in the 37 degree hell hole that is Sydney today and I can start painting first thing tomorrow.

My next exhibition will be titled 'Fantastic bots and where to destroy them' Laughing

It only got up to 34 degrees today and the floor didn't dry out - hopefully I can do it early tomorrow before it gets hot. That would mean the moving machinery into the shed next Monday.

I do have a split system - a little air-con and a bigger one Smile. They will fit into the two holes in the back wall of the shed one day, but they are a bit too heavy to lift up there by myself. Once the floor is finished, I might be able to rig up the chain hoist to get them installed.

Shed:

The floor still isn't dry Evil or Very Mad! Quite a bit of water made it under the wall cladding and must have been absorbed by the insulation - now its sloooowly oozing back out. Its supposed to storm tonight so I put plan B into operation; drag out the ancient de-humidifier and shut up the shed for the night. It dries out when it dries out I guess.

Antweight:

I cut out some Garolite panels to help get an idea of where all the internal parts will fit. with no precision tools available, I made printed matching drilling guides for the side snd top panels and they worked fairly well:

Judging from the way the battery fits in, the frame can be quite a bit smaller vertically.
