Couldn't get hold of Russell this afternoon, I'm pretty sure that'll fit though.

I'll get hold of him tomorrow and confirm all is good to go.

Thanks - Your mill is at least the size of mine and the stock fits it easily. You might want to hang the unused end of the stock off the table to make clamping easier but that's about the only issue I can see. As soon as I am done with the current batch of mounting blocks for the 3D printer, I will throw the titanium on the mill and start facing it down.

Don't start cutting metal *just* yet ;->
Gotta come up with a plan for how to cut it first.
I'll let you know tomorrow.

We might want some material to get the feeds and speeds sorted too.

No worries - there is a huge chunk of unused material at one end for testing - perhaps it could make another beetle ring spinner...

This might help with deciding how to clamp & cut the part:

There is heaps of stock all around the part to clamp to. The one problem I can see with profiling he part in the mill is the internal corners at each tip. If the CNC just rounds them off, I can mount the bar vertically and finish the corners off on my mill.

Decimator:

Its probably a good idea to have a test fit before CNCing the weapon bar, so I printed it out:

Well, I half printed it Laughing

There is only 4mm clearance at the top so I need to adjust things to get a more even spacing.

NST would occasionally hit its own chassis in a really big hit despite its titanium bar. I am not sure what the clearance was but it was much more than 4mm. Just a heads up.

I had the same problem with Scissorhand's Ti bar hitting the underside of the frame - it needed a 20mm clearance to fix the problem. Decimator's Ti bar is absolutely massive down near the hub and quite stubby compared to NST and Scissorhands to try to minimise any vertical deflection. We won't know how well that works until after a few wedge and vertical spinner matches.

Progress:

...very, very slow progress! I finally freed up the mill to start work on Decimator's new titanium bar:

Based on how long that amount of milling took, each pass will take around 70 minutes and there are eighteen passes, so that's at least 21 hours of brain-numbing work Shocked. Its probably going to take almost a week of real time to do the work - I don't fancy standing in front of the mill for more than three hours each day.

You are sitting down? It was $632 USD before shipping! That means I have to turn nearly $200 of titanium into swarf. A power feed would be nice but I always thought the one that fits this mill was over-priced at around $800 and a bit dodgy - starting with the 110V motor.

Couldnt you collect the swarf and make Fireworks with it or something ?

$200 worth of Titanium shavings should make some nice sparks if you can get it to ignite. Smile

I tried that in the past - it self-extinguishes as soon as you take the heat source away. Titanium powder from grinding does much better - waving a propane torch over the vice after Ti grinding is awesome Laughing

At that price, long live Hardox I say Very Happy

21hrs is along time, not worth farming it out to a shop to quickly do for you?

21 hours doesn't even include overhead like refiling coolant, changing carbide inserts, etc. I don't know any local shops that would do it. The last time I got a local shop to do something relatively simple, the cost was way higher than expected, which put me off farming out work. Any suggestions on a machining business for this type of work?
