Winch Relay Servo

The winch servo used in The Disassembler is in my opinion is the simplest (and effective) weapon to make for the sportsman class.

*This will be filled in over the next few nights*

Why a winch?
There is many ways to make a lifter. Lots are much sleeker, lighter and more effective than a winch. But when it comes down to simplicity the winch setup is still quite a nice package. It contains a very high reduction gearbox, a powerful motor, an assembly to keep them all together and a controller.

The Bad: As always you don't get everything.
Unfortunately the motor is quite heavy. It also has very low inductance leading to big voltage spikes and is quite hungry for current. The cast bits of the assembly are a little fragile and it needs limit switches.

1. Parts & Tools
1 x 3000Lb Winch - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/390457328300?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
2 x 1A Diodes (these dont need to be anything special just whatever you have)
1 x Botbitz 10A
1 x Arduino Nano
1 x Pot (I liberated one from an old T6A as it was a nice size)
1 x Set of 3D printed pot mounts.

2. Stripping the winch
The winch comes packaged with a bunch of gear some of which is useful and some that is just filler.
Things to do when you get your winch:
- Remove the Cable
- Remove the cross bracing bars on the output section
- Set aside the controller box
- Use one of the dome nuts on the cross bracing bars to replace the locking knob on the winch.
- Replace the M6 bolts that hold the cable drum to the gearbox. (The Chinesium bolts tend to shear)

Some early pics of the setup

3. Programming the Controller

4. Mounting your weapon arm

5. Winch upgrades and recommendations.

Now build all the sportsmans.

What are the prospects for throwing an outrunner on the gearbox and a tz85 simon k in the loop?

That would be what everyone is thinking! IMHO, you need an MCU to interpret the radio PPM signal, manage two limit switches and output PPM to the ESC.

That was essentially what Dylon had except with a real gearbox. Entirely possible but we are going for simple here.

After unpacking all my stuff from Vivid today I can safely say that the teensy that was controlling the winch is toast.

Have a few other micros around and have ordered some Arduino nanos.

Any ideas why the MCU is toast?

The 5V, GND and ADC lines all got shorted together on the top plate in one of the battles.

Not sure if something else melted but its getting hot and I couldn't easily get all the hot glue off it.

Photos are looking interesting - I just ordered one of the winches to fit on an old four wheel base that's lying around.

This is a repost of the rough gearbox and motor dimensions:

I am waiting on new arduinos before I can rebuild it. Need to post his nose CAD so everyone can mount pots.

I've never played with arduino stuff before, so sorry about the newbie questions:
- hardware wise, do I just need the arduino nano and a micro USB cable? (plus obviously the rest of the bits on Steve's list + cabling etc)
- there seems a bit of variability in price, would both this one and this one be identical / the right thing to buy? (I'm guessing the price difference is Australian vs Chinese seller, but would like to be sure before ordering)
- the nano seems to be a discontinued model - is there any benefit/disadvantage getting a micro instead? What about something like the A-Star 32U4 Micro which lists itself as Arduino compatible?
