Decimator's new electronics module is almost finished:

I replaced the YEP weapon controller with the Jeti 125 amp ESC from Shiny; I am not so keen on the YEP controllers. I decided to try out the new locking XT-60 connectors and discovered two things: the back shells just fit 10 gauge wire and they are nearly impossible to remove without damage - so make sure you don't need to make changes before snapping the shells on to the connectors!

The module is a tight fit right now, but once the drive motor is repositioned 100 forwards the module will have plenty of space and I should be able to fit MT60 connectors on the motors & TZ85s.

If anyone wants a YEP controller for the postage cost, let me know.

gearbox rebuild:

After a slow week, I finally got working on the new end plates for the P60 gearboxes. These are the rear plates, with four extra holes to hold on the support plate at the back of the motor:

I did four plates so I'd have two 'get out of jail' spares if things went wrong, but so far they are all near perfect. Once all the holes are tapped, they will go in the new 4 jaw chuck and get the bosses turned to locate the front of the motor and the back of the gearbox. Its hard to believe that I resisted buying a 4 jaw chuck for at least five years Laughing.

Two spare TZ85a controllers, the programmer and a nifty cable arrived today. Let's see if I can flash the controllers with Simon K firmware without bricking them...

Decimator

Most of the new materials and tools arrived for Decimator's upgrades - who knew that DHL delivered on a Sunday?

I only need a short piece off that massive 100mm round bar, so the remainder might make a drum spinner some day.

The tiny 6-32 tap for the P60 gearboxes worked out really well. Its always a concern that small taps will snap easily, but with this mini tap wrench, the tap never felt like it was in any danger:

Right after I tapped that hole I realised that the central hole was drilled too large to fit the front motor bearing and all four plates are scrap! Mad At least I now have four test pieces to practice with in the 4 jaw chuck.

I made some copper soft jaws for the chuck and you can just see the black plastic spacer behind the plate, which I hope will make alignment easier.

Plenty of progress, not all of it in the right direction though.

Not for much longer! The new gearbox front & back plates are a mixture of M4, 10-24 and 6-32. I really like the coarse imperial threads compared to metric; they are much harder to tear out of aluminium.

new drum bot concept:

Here is a rough concept drawing of a bot that uses up the spare aluminium from Decimator. It uses mostly on-hand internal parts and the side armour is a single piece of rolled 7mm titanium. It already looks overweight to me, but if it can be trimmed down the frame neatly gets around the weakness in Shiny's broken frame by not having any corners:

7mm Rolled Titanium Armour... Ok, attacking from the top it is.
Anyway of moving the wheels further forwards? It will steer like a pig otherwise. Besides that... looks good!
