Glen really had that drivetrain dialed-in for the last event so I will likely use the in-runners unless I can't shorten them enough or the motor somehow takes up more room than expected. Since I just thought of a sneaky way to knock off another 5mm, they are almost guaranteed.

After pushing pixels around in CAD, I have a new weapon bar option:

Look familiar? Laughing It is the same diameter as the steel bar but only weighs around 2.2Kg, while the steel bar is around 3Kg. I'm hoping that the KE won't be reduced too much by keeping the weight distributed out to the ends. Losing that amount of weight should be more than enough to make up for the heavier weapon motor.

Hill-billy no cost larger lathe Laughing

Here is a mock-up of a lathe mod to allow me to make the new Decimator motor pulley without needing to spend $5K on a new lathe:

The idea is to cantelever the compound slide so that it can reach the back of the motor can to cut the V pulley. At the moment the cutter is far too high but if I flip the tool upside down and run the lathe in reverse, it just might work. First off, I need to find some longer bolts to attach the extension to the cross slide and then we can have a test cut.

More Decimator upgrades:

I found that the battery mount is causing the pack to break - the cells have split the heatshrink and are starting to slide out one end. The pack is held in place with super strong velcro (can't remember the name) so the wrapping stays put while the insides escape Sad. This could be the perfect application for the soft-drink bottle armour, so I'm bumping up the priority and might have something to show over the weekend.

The bottom carbon fibre sheet is getting replaced with 0.1" titanium. Its going to be mounted a little differently to create an extra 2mm of internal height in the frame. That means the top cover can be made of something lighter to minimise the weight gain and the titanium will last much longer than the CF.

The fused link power switch is a perfect fit in Decimator's frame, so I can use the same UK approved power switch in all my bots Smile.

Titanium would be good if you have the weight, I'd suggest you weigh the bottom panels first though, because the dry carbon is MUCH lighter than your regular kind, IIRC it's the same weight as the 5mm plastic panels.

Don't worry, Decimator will be (slightly) less terrifying than before. The aim is to dial the power back and improve the weapon motor until Decimator can run reliably for a full three minutes. So less terror but for much longer. Laughing

@ Glen: the top panel only weighs 224 grams, so the bottom plates will probably be under 200g. The titanium will weigh far more than that but I am creating spare weight with the lighter weapon bar.

Decimator CAD:

Here is the first draft of the new parts layout. Everything apart from the power switch is in almost the same position. The drive motors are moved forwards as far as possible so that the battery and electronics can be moved outwards and away from the weapon motor:

It would only be a very small black hole... Laughing

Glen smoked 3 or 4 smaller motors so I figure it needs something larger to be reliable and if a Rotomax doesn't do the trick, CERN are OK lending me something larger:

There is no overkill.
There is just "open fire" and "pass more ammo please"

Same motor in Catharsis, just slightly thicker stator.
