Thanks for the photos, our 2nd fight was my favourite of the event and I am still kicking myself for not hitting record on the on-bot camera! More photos & videos coming soon...

Thanks - if I had more time and editing talent, I would love to mash that up with the graphics from an actual FPS game Laughing

Post championships review:

Mr Mangle:

I am super pleased with Mangle's reliability; while it had a couple of small problems, nothing actually broke. There was an ESC set-up issue on the first day that made the bot drive in circles; I recalibrated both ESCs to fix that on day two and it made a huge difference. There was also the problem of all the lifters catching the reap hoop and dragging Mr Mangle around; I am looking at replacing the hoop with a solid disk of UHMW to prevent that.

The anti-wedge forks worked even better than I hoped; they really made the difference on day two, where I mostly had to beat wedges and lifters. The forks now look quite beaten up but still have sharp points and work like new.

To save weight and improve driving, I am looking at converting Mr Mangle to run off a single 18.5V pack. The drive motors may get a bit warm but the extra turn of speed and pushing torque will be worth it, particularly now I am driving a bit better. The weapon motor should still have plenty of power; there was only one fight where I turned the power above 25%, so there is a huge amount of untapped power left in the motor.

Shiny:

What a disaster! Without taking anything away from Whizbee, the welding on Shiny has serious problems. I measured the length of the cracked welding on the side that Whizbee hit and there is a total of 40cm - that is 50% of the total weld length Shocked. Here are some close-ups of the carnage:

This is the back corner where Whizbee hit. the actual impact is at the top left and you can see that although Whizbee's tooth was new & sharp, there is not much titanium removed. That suggests the weld gave way very easily and the bending Ti absorbed most of the impact. The weld obviously had very little penetration on the back panel.

This is the bottom of the side panel. The weld cracked thru the middle and what I notice is the straight & smooth edge a the root of the crack. To me, that's indicating that the weld had almost zero penetration into the base metal Mad

I'm not an expert on TIG welding but it seems there are three issues here: Brittle welds, very poor penetration and possibly the wrong filler material used. I can mill & grind out all the cracked welding but as the rest of the welding is just as suspect and the broken parts, Shiny's frame may be a write-off Sad

Unless I can find a better welder, I have to go back to the company that did Shiny - but what should I say? Not knowing exactly why all those welds busted makes it hard to direct the welder on what to do differently. I could say 'just fix it' but if the guy made mistakes in the first place, he might not be able to do a better repair job.
