I would assume this charger keeps supplying current to the bms then the bms shuts off the input. At least that is what the bms claimed. but did not ring true.

Looking at the bms it has no ic chip only fets and resistors etc. I am looking into ic chipped bms boards now.

Angle grinder is hot and noisy in the gearbox. It is a 15 years old Metabo. Should I try replacing the bearing or just get a new one? Thanks.

You can probably get a replacement bearing off ebay for few dollars. I would say its worth it. If it doesn't help then replace it. Might as well try as they don't build angle grinders like they used to, maybe replace the brushes while your at it if your giving it a service.

^ concur.

New bearing and pack it full of grease then it should be good to go. There isn't too much to fail in there unless the gears have chewed up.

If its a metabo replace the bearing and use for another 15 years.

My old cabinet making job we had metabo stuff around 15 years old that ran allll day long. they just replace the bearings every couple of years and re grease them and they ran great.

Pre-loading roller bearings

I am thinking about making a heavy duty bearing block with two tapered rollers. What's the proper way to tension the bearings - I am looking for something that is 'set & forget' as much as possible.

Hardened shims as spacers to preload the inner race is how I've been doing it. Just enough that there's no play or additional drag from the bearings.

NSK has a good booklet on machine spindle design that has a bunch of useful info, i believe their recommended way is to use a threaded collar pushing on bellville washers to account for thermal expansion on the bearings, probably doesn't work so well on a robot weapon taking a bunch of impacts though.

I will definitely find that NSK book. Interesting comment about the bellville washers; I already have plenty from Scissorhand's weapon bar clutch.

http://www.exvalos.cz/soubory/File/Machine_Tool_Spindle_Bearing_Selection_and_Mounting_Guide.pdf that's one of them, there might be a 2nd version that goes through designing the actual spindle, can't recall entirely.

Bellvilles would work and make the tolerance not so critical, my worry is any big hit in the direction of them (assuming we are talking about weapons) is going to compress the washers in and the whole assembly will loosen up temporarily.

The heating across a < 3 minute fight is likely not enough to make using them worthwhile vs a solid spacer. YMMV as always

LED dimmer

I need to dim a number of LED strips for a photography light and had a crazy idea. Could a brushed ESC do the trick? Commercial dimmers work by PWMing the supply the same way an ESC does. The dimmers also have a constant current circuit but I figure that as I am using 12V strips with dropping resistors, I don't need the constant current feature. I can control the brightness with a servo tester and sticking a blocking diode between the ESC and the LEDs will protect them from reverse voltage.

Could it work, or is it a dumb idea?

In theory couldnt you use a servo tester as a dimmer switch?

It wouldn't provide the current I need to drive 3 or 4 LED strips and the servo testers put out the same signal as a receiver - its only 6V and a couple of milliamps.

Yep it works …I we used a botbits beetle/ant 10a esc(i think) to dim 12v leds we had in a dolls house installation, we had our films showing in. It lasted the duration of the show, for three weeks straight going 24/7 so they work….if you go to dim 20%, the led begin to flicker though. We just used a servo tester…but try and get one that doesn't have reverse etc..that can be annoying if you bump the wrong button.

what you making?

I am making something you will like - a giant Luxo light. Its going to be a soft light for table top photography and uses a huge 50 cm reflector that I picked up at Ikea.
