Ironside is a flipper now? Didn't see that coming. Any info on Ice Storm, its the only bot I don't have anything on?

Shiny:

Nearly ready to play:

Shiny is still 500 grams under weight, so I might make some options to swap in & out:

* Magnetic hold-down, should weigh 200 to 300 grams.

* Extra thick top cover for axes, about 200 grams more than the basic cover.

* Rear wedge or ablative armour

Couriers:

UPS arrived 2 days early with the replacement ESC - they got here at 7:30 pm and apologised for being late as their truck broke down - that's really good service! DHL, on the other hand, lost a box of screws and special titanium taps from McMaster and separately lost another shipment with an expensive micrometer. Mad

Jolt:

Huge beater looks huger after painting:

Shiny's beater looks tiny by comparison! The new beater has a pretty rough surface finish where it was face milled:

I wonder if that will affect it's aerodynamic performance?

Strategy:

I just realised that I have a great option for Mr Mangle's Q7 match with Little Hitter and Ice Storm. Just for once I am not up against spinners, so its time to get out the lightweight extended forks:

These weigh 200 grams less than the regular forks, the exact weight of doubling the top cover to protect against Little Hitter's axe Twisted Evil. The light forks also lower the beater 2mm to help defeat wedges. I'm using up some scrap Ti sheet to make the same accessory for Shiny, its too good an idea not to share.

I wanted to fight Mr Mangle Sad

Neat forks. How high is the beater normally off the ground?

I just measured it at 5.5mm for the normal forks. I like to have some extra clearance so the beater can't hit the floor seams, unlike some folk (lookin' at you, Mouldy) who like to mow the arena flat.

As I have some spare forks, I could mill the bottom off a pair and get the clearance down to around 2mm and give them a test run before the event.

Totally Mangled Sad

I had a test spin-up of Mr Mangle today, using the new concrete filled target bot. The first hit at 80% power was fairly impressive, with the 15.4 KG target thrown almost 4 metres:

http://www.nswrfc.org/Nick/Broke_Beater.mp4

Then I dialled the weapon speed up to 100% - what a bad move that was!

Holy crap! That's a bit of a problem this close to the event, I really hope I can get a replacement made in time. The test bot is pretty wasted as well; the welding has split around all three sides:

oi if it wasnt for me keeping the arena flat you'd need more ground clearance Razz

also... noticed your comment about driving was followed up by your test video...in which you made tracks for your robot to go in a straight line haha

In all seriousness though.. that sucks about the beater, i had the same failure happen on 540 during testing and i know how diss-heartening it is... can you just pinch shiny's beater for mr mangle for the championships as a direct replacement if you cant get a new one made in time?

When i inspected the failure point on 540's beater... the material crystal structure seemed real weird at the failure point and i suspected bad materials... kept the design identical but changed the material (from D2 to hardox 500) and i never had a failure...havent been a fan of tool steel for weapons since...seems better to have a tooth deform over time than to have total material failure.

Just to throw it out there the difference between s7 at 53rhc and hardox/bisalloy 500 is only a 13% increase of tensile strength for s7 with 88% less impact toughness.

That sucks tho, can you get some hardox from RPG group and get that waterjetted then turn the axles on yourself?

I figure there are three options:

1) Get an identical beater made in S7 steel and limit the power to under 80%. That should be reliable as opponents are lighter & softer than the test bot.

2) Get an S7 beater with larger 25mm axles and increase the power. That means new and heavier bearings (already have them for Jolt) and new bearing blocks. the beater will have to drop 60 grams, which is hardly noticeable.

3) Get a wear steel beater. Hardox and Bisalloy are unknown in the US so it will have to be an American equivalent and my best bet for getting a new beater fast is Whyachi. There is no way I can make it myself on my puny little lathe. IF Whyachi can turn a beater from hardened AR600 steel, it will save all the time for the heat treatment and all the effort of making new bearing blocks.

I have already drawn up a new beater for options 2 and 3, so its really up to what Whyachi can do for me in the time before the event. As a backup plan, I can use the original beater from last year; it is the exactly same weight as the broken beater but it has those threaded holes that cause stress failure.

If they have the S7 in that size maybe get it done at a much reduced hardness like 45. Even then it's still a rather massive piece of steel. I don't think there would be much risk of it bending. The 25mm axles sound good.
