Mr Mangle:

Woo Hoo! Mr Mangle is officially registered for the UK championships Very Happy. Although Mr Mangle is ready to go and just needs testing to find unknown problems, I am getting the upgraded frame welded next week so that there will be two complete versions. Once the second bot is finished, I can compare them during testing and decide which one is best for the UK.

Jolt

About half the frame is cut and shipped from the US; in place of the TI side panels, I got temporary panels cut from 1/8th" mild steel so that I can check that everything fits together. The rest of the panels will be waterjetted locally from off-cuts in the next week or two, so I should be able to test fit most of the parts by the end of the month.

Jolt:

Jolt's hold-down magnets are almost done:

The epoxy stiill needs sanding flat after it has cured and the mounting holes will be added once the frame arrives. The pair of magnet assemblies weight 320 grams and should almost triple the wheel traction - I figure there is between 10 and 13 Kg of weight bearing on the wheels and the magnets add at least 20Kg of hold-down force.

Gearing up:

With Jolt's drive motors only 2 or 3 weeks away, its time to finish the gearbox mods. There are two more gearboxes to do (always smart to have a spare!) and they are about 1/3rd completed.

Gearing down Evil or Very Mad:

I finished machining all the planetary gears today, only to hear that Neu Motors have lost the #@*$~! slotted shaft I sent them - that's two weeks lost building Jolt!

That sucks Sad

Surely they're responsible for now using their resources to have a replacement one made to your specs?

The shaft was found after a couple of days and they promised the motors will get priority. For a small company, their in tray must be pretty disorganised Smile.

The gearboxes still need more machining, which can't be done until the lathe is back together. I am spending the weekend finishing of the DRO installation and the gearboxes should be ready for a test fit on the chassis, which arrives mid-week.

Lathe DRO

The DRO scales are all mounted and working; the carriage scale was much easier to mount as I could use some of the parts from the kit rather making everything myself:

Mounting the DRO display will have to wait - its too rainy to take the lathe splash guard outside to modify it for the display mount. There is still plenty to do inside; the planetary gears need polishing an I can get started with Jolt's weapon pulleys.

Good / Bad news:

The good news is that the external panels for Jolt arrived to day and so far they fit together perfectly. The temporary steel side panels have been a great help and true to form, as soon as they arrived I found some titanium on-line to make the proper side panels Rolling Eyes.

That's OK though, I found that the new Banebots P80 gearboxes are 1mm smaller than the old version, which alters the axle height and mis-aligns the outside wheel bearing. I am serving Mr Murphy a thick slice of fuck-you and ordering the titanium with modified CAD for the bearings Laughing

The bad news is that the head cold I have is really whooping cough! That explains the crippling chest pain and extreme tiredness for the last few weeks and bot building progress might be slow for another week.

Patience pays off!

Mr Mangle is getting new drive motors for The UK event:

I found these motors almost a year ago and they have been out of stock until today. As far as I know, these are the smallest sensored out-runner motors available anywhere. The vital statistics are:

1/8" shaft
250 Watts continuous
3.4 ounces, 95g (with wires)
2000kv
2-4s lipo
34mm diameter x 34mm long face to rear

That's right, the motor is the same diameter as a regular 550 motor but about half as long and it still pumps out over double the power of my in-runner motors. They also have a higher KV, so Mr Mangle will be faster and able to do do some pushing. Very Happy

Jolt:

I test fitted the right side of the frame and the wedge:

The underside of the wedge, showing the pocketing and the reinforcing strip.

When its in place, the wedge is at a very low angle, perfect for launching other spinners Twisted Evil.

These are the major internal parts on the right side; the beater is from Mr Mangle and the real thing will be quite a bit thicker. To make up for the thinner sides, I added two reinforcing strips either side of the wheels. right at the back, you can just see the magnetic hold-down module.
