Other idea I just had.... Instead of making mounts for the wheels I wonder whether it would be possible to just hack up a drill casing.
I know phillip has done this back in the day with his pivot mounted designs. What I was thinking was pull out all the internals. Cut off the bottom section for use as a battery clip. Split the top half in half and then screw the side without the screws down to a timber plate. Then place modded drill back inside it and screw back down the top.
Not the greatest mount or most compact mount in the world but would take 0 skill to make if it works.
Then you can use whatever clip mechanism is left behind for the battery connector (if it stays in one piece without the other bits. And even use the charger that came with the drills and don't modify the packs.
Safer for noobs (no shorting batteries) and also cheap and simple. Run a few wires to the above board and you could very well be close to driving.
Plan for the board would be you have a PCB only one version, PCB + ICs or PCB + wire and a little switch board.
Depending on what you want all should be relatively cheap.

So just went to another bunnings while killing time waiting for real estate.
And red wheels are now $6 which is stupid. Got to be something better I just don't know what and remember red wheels only need a washer and they just screw on so any mounting would need to be included in price but there has to be something better out there. _________________ Steven Martin

The crappy white wheels of the same Dia are still much cheaper, but I don't think they're as easy to mount... _________________ ( •_•)
I pulled apart a $22 k-mart drill. And it all works better than I expected.
I came up with a method to mount the drill, battery and maybe even a plywood wheel with no additional parts needed. So pretty happy.
Now need to think about how it would all fit into a shell as it would be fairly large and the idea would be to cut it out of plywood with a jigsaw maybe with some sort of slotted design so that it was pretty strong.
If you used relays and the $5 radio Tim found you might even be able to get a full running robot for < $100.
Total cost like $25 which for a full Rx and Controller is more than acceptable. Now just need to wait for them to show up and when I get some spare time I will see how it goes.
