belts source

hello,

would anybody know of a source of belts suitable for a featherweight?

i was thinking that the type they use in turntables would be good, but i had at look at them at dick smith today and they where way to small.

the only other appliances i could think of that could yield belts are washing machines and dryers and last i looked the width is right but the pulleys themselves are huge in diameter. same with car alternator belts, at least the one i have.

and another question is a source of pulleys. im not sure of what type of pulleys cars used on their air conditioning systems, but the belt that came of one seems to be the perfect width for what i want, soo does anyone know what diameter the pulleys tend to be?.

FYI most new washing machines use motors similar to those we were pulling appart out of the VCR's at robowars. ie stepper type motors. this means no belts to speak of. but if you can find old ones they might be OK, still old washing machine might mean perished belt.

You can buy washing machine belts, not that expensive, then you just make some pullies up on a lathe.

The problem with 2nd hand pulleys is they usually have large bores and not much choice of ratios. I have a bunch of local contact details for new pulleys if you want, but they are all heavy duty and expensive. The best option I know to get the right diameter and bore size pulleys is RMP - buy the belt locally and get the pulleys mailed while our dollar is up against the greenback Smile

Glen hunt around washing machine and sewing machine repair shops some still have stocks of older model (new) machine belts and puleys ect take your bot with you as i find you get more interest if you show them what you want the stuff for .....some engenering shops have smaller ali pullies that have small bores that you just drill or machine out to the size you need.I made Vetrical limits ones out of steel as i didnt have any ali that dia on hand but i might buy a few different sized billets just for makeing pullies as it would be a lot lighter .

Rather than hunt around spare parts shops and council clean-ups, ask youself what your time is worth (plenty), then go directly to the right shop and get exactly what you need with no fussing about.

For standardised industrial aluminium pulleys, the only onesI have seen in Sydney is the locally made Stenco brand. getting an industrial pulley means that there are many belt length options and many shops will have spares. The A size belts seem about right for the power levels generated in a featherweight. The B sized belts are a little thicker & stronger, but not worththe extra weight unless you are running a huge motor.

Having phoned or visited the following places in Sydney I can definitely recommend them all for belts and aluminium pulleys:

Blackwoods : This place is the aussie equivalent to McMaster Carr in the US. They have 400,000 catalogue items. Go to the head office and warehouse in Smithfield. They take 1.5 hours to get orders picked from the warehouse so visit their web site, get the part numbers and phone in a cash sale first. Blackwoods was cheaper than BSC for the pulleys.

BSC Motion: This company specialises in bearings and power transmission. They seem to have more varieties of pulley in stock than Blackwoods but were about %20 more expensive - on a $10 pulley that's hardly worth worring about if you can get it when you want it.

Consolidated Bearings: Virtually the same as BSC, except they have some different imported brand names and different branch locations that might suit some people. If they don't have something on the shelf, it generally arrives overnight. Their only problem is their poor web site that does not mention many of their stocked items.

BlackWoods is a great place, I've bought small bits of 10mm Aluminium from there, plus welding supplies and even tools. I would recommend BlackWoods, along with Porters Engineering if your a QLDer. Porters have a far few ali and steel pullies plus a large range of nuts and bolts plus wheels and chain and sprockets. I'm sure 30% of our bot parts have come from Porters. The guy in at Gympie Porters Engineering is a brilliant guy and often gives us some good rates on bulk buy (ie: 10 Allen head bolts with spring washers and Nyloc nut, $5 and no GST!)
