Hi I went through the checkout process and it says postage to Australia would be $30

Think it will work....might order some to see. It says it was going to be $66 or 2 drills +screws -total.

The parts are listed as follows:
Motor Assembly - $6.99ea
Gearbox Assembly - $8.46ea

10x sets with left hand screws = $212.91 AUD shipped.
Makes the drills pretty cheap at $21.29 each.

Thread dredge.

On the drill thread topic. Thought I would mention these drills again. The Ryobi ones are all still working. And I have never broken a gear in them. They are 50% plastic 50% steel but yeh still and never broken a gear. Just to put this in perspective they have run in WedgeBot since it was made. Like 3-4 years ago. They were always run on Red wheels @ 4S Lipo or 5S A123s. It has even survived being completely torn apart and several fights with scissor hands.

They don't have a clutch so no dicking about their either. The one thing I don't like is the stupid pins to hold on the back plate. These can pop of in huge impacts. (They are mounted with zip ties in wedgebot) But this may not be a bad thing in hindsight. And with proper mounting I doubt it would happen. Zipties just shouldnt be used to hold on your motors Razz.

Maybe we should import some more as a known quantity of drills. Just gotta make sure not to forget the left hand screws again and they are the same. As I doubt people are going to find something cheaper than drills its just that we need to run them on 4S or less and make them easy to change.

Hey guys,
I'm just trying to get ultimate clarification on my little 4x drill motor question.

2x drills, 85amp each is clearly the way to go...
4x drills (each needing their own esc), 85amps each seems overkill...

The team tentacle torque calculator seemed to indicate that for a machine of my theoretical stats (with 4x 18v drills) max amp draw would be in the single figures... that seems a little optimistic, but if I can get away with SAFELY using say 30amp escs from botbitz, it would save me a lot of money (which I will spend on other botbitz products at some point, i swears Razz).

thx

This is just opinion / feeling, but I'd say if you are using a 12v drill @ 12v or near to it, (say no more than a 4S lipo) 30A ESC's x4 is the way to go. What I would personally do is grab 1 or 2 spares, because while I dont think you're going to blow all 4 at once even under extreme circumstances, chances of 1 of them going somewhere somehow is higher, so you want to have spares on hand to cover that during an event. Especially if your delicate wheels are prone to stalling the drills.

So AFAIC your options are:

4x 30A + spare(s)
-- 6x $40 = $240 total With 2 spares (Personally I'd recommend this)
-- 5x $40 = $200 total With 1 spare

OR

4x 85A and take the (lower) risk of not getting a spare = 4x $75 = $300 total

Having said all that I'd still recommend shelving the fancy omni drive train for the time being and just putting together a simple, cheap 2WD robot and practicing with that, refining it until it's reliable, then with your greater experience tackle the omniwheel design later on. If you're anything like I was, I'm wasting my breath here, as this is what I was told as well, but I now believe in it strongly enough to preach it to you, so take from that what you will Smile

So would a single 30a botbitz drive 2 drill motors happily?
(I know the tz85a do)

@Jaemus and @M&J thanks for the advise guys! I've hit up the Logan recycling market and got 6drills for $20. All worked; gears fine, though motors in different states of wear it seems. Contacted ozito and they say they are willing to send me out 8 x 18v used drill motors+gearboxes for $5 each plus postage. I think thats kind of a one off though.

Hey guys

The drills steve mentioned earlier in this thread re: zipties holding the motors on from what I can gather based on what he wrote, sound just like the new 12v Ozito drills I purchased they are a Type 1 according to the sticker on the side of them anyway.

As for the $20 K-mart drills I've read about are they type 1 ? or 2 ? and are all the gears steel/metal ? The Ozito's have all metal gears but a crappy gearbox to motor mount scenario twist on with the two locking pins.

So if any one knows of a decent 12v drill that has a screw on gearbox with metal gears that does not cost the earth please let me know, hell even if it cost the the earth let me know, pm me if ya have to.

Like everyone looking for a reliable yet affordable and ultimately disposable drill.
