I reckon the winches you used arent as good as the smaller 2000bl winches like in Wanda....give them a go i reckon. Very Happy

Having worked with 5-6 different winch motor versions now, I believe the motors in DD are perfectly fine. The simple fact is currently we have too little gearing for the motors (approx 5:1) and they spend too much time in low RPM, high amperage situations (which explodes the ESC's / motors) because of it, add in the fact we had 12.8AH of LiPol that would happily supply 400A to each motor, it's a BBQ waiting to happen. This is the exact problem you had with Wanda when running the magnums.

With the second stage of gearing added, we will be close to 25:1 gearing, which will allow the motors to spin at a higher rpm without as much amperage draw. We will probably have to step up the voltage to 6-8S to gain back some of the speed, but it will also increase the peak power of the motors to something silly Razz

The 1300 watt winches use a 3 stage planetary gearbox instead of the single stage weird split pitch design like the smaller 300-700 watt winches. I'll just be dropping another stage on to each motor with a new extended ring gear.

I have been offered a pair of long mags which would probably be almost perfect ratio @ 5:1 on the gearboxes in Double dragon. Not sure if mating these would be easier than adding in another stage of gearing.

I am still really hoping I can get time off to go to Miami but not sure at this stage just wondering what the easiest option is to get it up and running.

Wow, grab those Mags with both hands quickly! The front face of the Mag motor is very versatile and the shaft is usually long enough to allow for an adapter plate to match any gearbox. As long as your gearbox pinion has a 1/2" keyed bore, it will be easy to adapt it.

It has a Hex bore but.... it might be able to be converted to a 1/2 keyed really easily with a bit of lathe work

Just fired up the CAD again and appears that the long mags are almost exactly the same length as the current motors. So this might be possible.

Only downside is their price tag so very very doubtful I would be able to afford a set of spares.
