how to mill a spiral?

Hi guys
Is it possible, using a 1.5mm end mill to make 1mm deep cut in some breadboard.....in a spiral shape where the spirals are about 2mm apart ?.......So the spiral would start in the middle of a 2ft breadboard disk and move out to the edge?...(bit like the grooves on a very course old vinyl record) ... Could it be done with a cnc router or something?

Its for film developing tank we want to build.....we have one that takes 15m of film already ...but i want one that will take 30m.... Very Happy

.....other wise i was thinking of making a big coil out of something 1mm/2mm wide and doing a fibre glass mould of it....i just know that milled version would be a nicer finish. ...if i could print it that would be good...but i dont know how to draw it then i don't know how to print it out in little chunks..that would fit together Sad

this is the one we own.....just need it bigger

How large? That could be laser cut out of acrylic very easily.

well it needs to be round..so the film can be wound on(in the dark)....probably 500mm across. it has to take 100ft /30m of film in the spiral Sad

Yeah acrylic would be fine! Anything inert would work i reckon.

Laser cutting sounds possible, but how would you leave the radial arms that bridge the spiral to keep it in place? I am not sure that laser cutting the radial arms separately and then gluing the arms to the spiral will be strong enough.

Film reels need to be very smooth and the radial arms can't have any rough bits to snag the film as it is wound onto the reel. I remember some bad moments winding just 36 frames of film onto a reel; doing 30m would be epic!

Yeah i know 15m is fun... especial when its only 8mm wide in total darkness.

.....another idea i had was making the spiral out of mig stainless wire silver soldered to stainless support arms. Not sure if the silver solder would effect or be effected by the developer etc. This technique would be pretty low tech and easy....just my style. Very Happy

Old 35mm reels used to be made of stainless steel wire - they were better than the plastic ones IMHO. As long as the developer is fairly neutral Ph, the silver solder should be OK; you could always dunk the solder rod in some developer overnight to see if it corrodes.
