Motorizing a Skateboard

Hey again. This isnt quite Robot Related but i got bored walking a straight concrete road to school everyday. So im considering motorizing my skateboard haha.

Id only need to motorize one size of the board. I had a look at this guys skateboard : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtobFiMKk5M

I cant figure out a motor & esc that would work, preferably brushless as id like to place it all on the undersize.

Making the truck isnt much of a problem.

Can you guys suggest a good cheapish motor?

First off I am moving this to off topic. Secondly this is illegal in Australia (wouldn't stop me doing it but just so you know when you get pulled over by the cops).

For the motor look on hobbyking and find something with about 3kW+ output then search for something similar with free postage on ebay it will usually be cheaper. You can also usually get combo ESC + motos too.

I am not 100% but anything other than a bicylce is illegal in QLD and pretty sure in all other states. NSW/VIC you can do petrol ones but not in QLD. I know the limit for bikes is 200W which is a bit different to 4kW but if you are trying to claim that its a bike I would suggest sticking a 200W sticker on the motor for shits. No one else will know.

My advice, look for the biggest, heaviest, lowest Kv brushless motor on hobbyking, then look for the biggest ESC to go with it, then go with the biggest amount of LiPol's you can afford to power it all. Budget $500+

If your on a complete tight assed budget, you will find a pair of 100w scooter motors will be sufficient to push a 80kg person along at 15kmh all day, every day. Grab a BotBitz 85A, throw on a few 6S LiPols with good capacity (5000mAh - 12000mAh) and low C discharge (cheaper) and you'll probably be able to do it for <$200

Hmm. Alright. I cant go for the scooter motor although it is easier to do. It needs to be able to fit in my locker.

This motor http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__19039__Turnigy_G110_Brushless_Outrunner_210kv_1_10_Glow_.html
and this ESC http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24566__HobbyKing_120A_ESC_4A_UBEC.html
and a couple of B-grade 6S 5000mAh 30C
should suffice right?

I would say my absolute budget would be $300 (Aka. 3 months work or alot of begging to my parents haha)
Its gonna be controlled by a cheap 2ch pistol radio.

Those should work, how well depends on a lot of factors.

The control can be this

Just a wire with a knob on the end to control the speed.

Also, in combination with the know TZ85 , this motor is more than exciting enough for daily use.

I'm contemplating that combo to "hybridize" my wifes 125cc scooter.

Adding 2Kw+ to the "original 9.2 Kw" will make a difference when needed.

Alright. I shall use the 270KV motor with the TZ85A and 2 B-Grade 5000mAh 6S 25C LiPo.

Ill need some help here.
I need to somehow connect the motor to the trucks itself. I had a LONG look at how the LaGrange L1 works and assembles: http://www.redrockboardshop.com/gallery

To do something like that id have to cut down my normal truck and weld a tube like they use there.
OR
I can try and have the end of this lathed down far enough to accomodate http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300822157012?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649
on the end of http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00jCZQsozdlGgy/Longboard-Truck-2-.jpg
and weld a plate to mount the motor like in the LaGrange
Thoughts?

If I was going to do it, I would replicate this:

Allows for some gearing which allows flexibility for top speed, acceleration and hill climbing ability.

Aha yes. Thats the LaGrange L1 that i was looking at. Id have to make it from scratch from the baseplate up.

Ill take apart a couple of spare trucks i have lying around for my skateboards and see how i can modify it without too much work.

The 270KV motor running at full power on the batteries (22.2v) with a 2:1 drive system should give me a theoretical top speed of 42km/h but in realistically would be around 25-30 km/h taking into account weight and ground type i think.

Found the metroboard on youtube and had a look at how they did it.
They took the same approach as i was going to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMYhUHeX5Fg
The only thing is the skate wheel they used had its own timing pulley embedded in it.
How would i go about connecting one of these

with the skate wheel?

The total cost of all the stuff needed - Motor, ESC, Batteries, 30T and 15T timing pulley with 60T belt + charger all up costs $200 Very Happy

Come on, we can't spoon feed you everything Smile
Do some thinking, maybe get out and try to build something yourself Wink

Give him a break, he's doin his best to put together a plan Smile

Making a skateboard drive would be easy as anything, getting it to work with the truck setup so you can actually steer it is a bit of a pain in the butt.

Driving both the wheels would mean remaking part of the truck which is a tricky piece. I don't think it could be done well without a welder + lathe.

Though some EV boards only drive one wheel and use a standard type truck. Maybe you could look into bolting a little timing pulley or sprocket set onto one of the wheels itself and then just weld a mount on the truck for your motor. That'd probably be easiest.
