Weyhey lets not say things we can't take back. Everyone loves a good burshless.

As for the axe, it looked so wretchedly simple. So i added another progressive linkage to convert the axe travel into a more or less, linear input that works with my coil spring. Any motorbike riders will see where i stole the idea from Razz

Though now i am kinda thinking itll just be easier to load the setup backwards via some kind of gear drive right off the output shaft the axe rides on. Then fire it off with a dog clutch ala overthruster. Trying to disassemble and implement this linear actuator is looking less worthwhile by the minute.

Right, Time for a change, now i have the monies, Co2 seems so much more realistic, so that's where this sportsman is headed Smile Here's a rundown of what i'll be using.

- 80x80 custom ram firing the axe through the aforementioned linkage setup
- 12oz paintball as the tank (full pressure co2)
- paintball regulator or i'll make my own depending on how spensive they are
- 9oz buffer
- pair of 1/2 inch QEVs for the ram and 1/2" tube through out
- 5/2 valve to trigger it all

Setup would be roughly similar to this, i like the idea Smile

http://www.teamonslaught.fsnet.co.uk/Woody%20set%20up.jpg
http://www.teamonslaught.fsnet.co.uk/pneu.htm

So ive ordered all the miscellaneous parts like pop off valves and the like. still need to solidify the design and work out the exact parts needed then i can build away.

Should be a good introduction to things before i go and make a full pressure flipper for the non-sportsman class with my own valves and the like Smile

As for the rest of the robot, we'll im tinkering with the dewalts today. I've been wanting to chop down the gearboxes but now i'm thinking its probably not worth the effort in that theres no gain to be had from doing that over the existing gearboxes. So will probably just leave em alone, but we'll see Smile

Chassis will most likely be laser cut mild steel and armour will probably just be 5mm aluminium for a change and to keep it light.

You might want to look at your buffer to ram volume ratio. You should aim for around 2.5 times the volume of the ram. That is, about three 9 oz bottles. You don't need the pressure rating of a paintball bottle in an LP system so you could save some weight and cost there.

Do you know the flow rate of the QEV?

Well thats something i've been thinking of, the volume of a 9oz bottle should be over 5 times the volume of the ram?? Though i am the worlds worst mathematician

Capacity of Buffer tank 9oz (255g)

1 mole co2 = 44g
moles of co2 in 9 oz tank = 5.795
255g of co2 at room temp (.041 mol/L) = 141.34L
Capacity of 255g tank at 68 bar (rated pressure) = 2.07L

Times bigger than ram = 5.14

80mm bore x 80mm stroke
Volume = .402L

Let me know whats wrong with that, aside from everything potentially lol.

As for the QEV flow, most likely irrelevant as i'll get round to making my own huge ones when it's all working Smile paintball is just easiest, they only cost $20 give or take.

take it easy.

I take my volumes from the Catalina Cylinders page products>paintball cylinders. The H2O capacity in the 12 oz bottle is 508 cc. 508*0.75 (reduce the 12oz figure to a 9 oz) gives 381 cc. You could use a 1.25 litre Coke bottle if you kept the pressure down.

I am looking forward to seeing what you do with your huge QEV.

9oz paintball tank would be less volume than your ram.

QEV sizing is much like porridge, getting it just right. Not to hot(large)!

Hmm! Couldn't find the volumes for the bottles and my numbers are clearly wrong haha, Cheers for the help boys, back to the calculator i go lol Sad

Till then heres some more work. The dewalts always had tons of backlash in them so the gyro worked pretty poorly. Adding three grub screws to press on the ring gear like a normal drill seems to have worked pretty sweet.

Have to grab some new threaded rod and nuts for the mounts as the old ones are extremely flogged out. may even see if i can redrill it for the next size up of a metric size. Then i can laser out a test bed to have a play around with the gyro now all the backlash has been removed.

Got half my long term debt paid off so i ruined everything and splurged on a bandsaw ;u; How i've needed one so. Got lots of mods to do though but despite that it'll make building anything 1000x faster.

Also grabbed a little drip feed oiler setup like angus' so ill cook up a mount for that tommorow and combined with the tangential tool holder thats on its way, well, i should be shredding metal on the lathe shortly, all ready to build a sportsman class robot Cool

Whoa! First a laser, now a bandsaw? You won't have the space to turn around in soon Smile.

Are the Dewalts for the sportsman bot? They seem a bit over-spec for a flipper. Nice idea with the grub screws - I wonder why nobody thought of that before?

Indeed, already scampering around looking for room to put the bandsaw. Need to upgrade the mill (rf-45 probably) soon so thats going to tax things even further, BUT i reckon thatll be the limit for now. Can't think of too many other neccessary large tools Razz

Perhaps i could replace the drill press with the milling machine itself and save some space. Or just leave the crap ryobi out in the open and see how long it goes Laughing

Yep yep the dewalts are for the sportsman, i figure they're here doing nothing so might as well be used. Plus they are darn reliable. Might also look at putting a bearing directly into the mount itself, the external bearing does the job but i reckon it can be misalligned a tiny bit when the bolts are getting done up which might bind the gearbox a little.

Drip feed coolant done! Drilled the mill head for 4x m6s and bolted the brackets on with some m6 and tube spacers. Got lazy and lasered out the top bracket bit lol. Looks really wonky in the 2nd pic but i swear it isnt ;~;

Going to fill it with the old oil from my bike and hopefully it helps things some!
