LOL, I had a good & long think about 'Enjoying myself a bit'. Outside of replacing Jamie on Mythbusters, a world tour of roller-coasters or a trip to the ISS, just messing about in the workshop and at robot events is right up there and WAY more practical!
Its a bit crass to 'flash the cash', but let's just say that I am pretty sure that I will be getting a solid 6 figure cheque in the next month or three (pending lawyers and supreme court documents, so its not a done deal yet). It absolutely not enough to make up for my loss, but it would be stupid NOT to use some on my main hobby.
On a practical level, the MDF bumpers on the walls worked a treat last Saturday, so I don't have a problem just replacing them as needed; its the floor and front barrier that we need to work on.

The robots dont have 25mm of MDF and then more steel and then concrete tiles behind the steel tho... composite armour floor
I agree, beetle arena needs some fettling, but no real need until there is a public event. It should also be stored at Marayong inside the feather arena imo.
That said, we need a quick way to run beetles at Marayong unless everyone would rather set up the portable arena there.
Also, Ant arena could also use some love. Needs some signage! Websites, logos, color, 'danger tape', etc and the floor needs the jags ground down. Could do a half day on this, maybe piggybacked onto the next Marayong event? _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam
<bovril> it collects data about the surrounding environment, then discards it and drives into walls

Does anyone know if there is a Hardox supplier in Sydney? I have several Bisalloy suppliers who can plasma cut the floor , but not one local Hardox supplier It might be that 5mm Bis 400 is cheaper than 3mm Hardox anyway, but its worth checking. Does anyone recall the arena size? I think its a bit over 5 metres on each side.
For construction, we will have to get the steel plasma cut into manageable panels and it would make sense to include a couple of locating tabs on each edge of the panels to make sure everything aligns before the parts are welded. 5 mm thick steel weighs almost 40 Kg per square meter, so keeping the panels small will make assembly easier. Given the sheet size of 2485 by 8000mm, a panel 1230 by 980mm will weigh 47Kg with very little waste material.
If we want a quickie Beetle arena, we can get some mounting points added to the main floor and then just bolt down some MDF or steel walls as needed. I'm thinking plasma cut holes in the bisalloy and weld-nuts on the back; the holes can be plugged with grub screws when not in use.
Jeff has been renting the house for about 20 years, so we are not too likely to have to rip up the floor any time soon. We spent half a day fixing the MDF floor and after the first event with just one spinner running, the floor already needs repair work. I figure that a low maintenance steel floor will encourage us to have more events as we won't need tedious repairs.
Don't worry about the cost; if anyone wasn't paying attention earlier, I am expecting the estate lawyers to give me a cheque for over $500,000 might as well spend 0.5% of it on my fave hobby!
