car problems

Our once trusty automatic 1990 suburu 4wd liberty has been doing weird stuff. At the moment it seems to not go into gear and is straining to go 30km but also has really bad turning problems. Like driving on a giant sponge.

Its at the a servo now so hopefully they can fix it. It has done this a few times then comeback to life.....real weird. it did this last night...then when we started it this morning it was fine and we drove to brizzy today.

Then we had lunch and started it and now it was impossible to drive back.

Any Ideas?

Turned out it was the rear dif...don't know why that was making our steering gammy but that is why i'm not a mechanic!

IIRC, it's because the older Subaru AWD's used a mechanical differential to do torque split between the front and back at 50/50. So if your rear diff is causing a lot drag or excessive load, it will be fighting the front diff. It's the same reason why those olders models must run the same size rolling diameter (within 1-2%) wheels or there is a war between the corners of the car.
