This is a cool thread...Good work steve!
Red wheels here in Ip Bunnings are around the $5 mark ea.
That is the plan. Should go hack them. 2in1 has demotivated me for the night. _________________ Steven Martin

K-mart drills.
Which way do you turn the screw to undo the chuck? Is it a LH thread?

Unless Kmart changed something, it's a LH thread yeah. Get a really good fitting screw driver and don't let it slip, you only really get one decent shot at removing it sometimes heh _________________ ( •_•)
I may have a supplier for some new gearmotors that i can sell cheaply, I seriously don't know how you can use drill motors with gearboxes... I tried it once and it wasn't fun. One drill I couldnt for the life of me get the chuck off....
Oh that's right, you know because I gave them to you lol.
The were a bit of a pain old Allen key in chuck worked. Just had to use a big one. _________________ Steven Martin

K-mart "Performer" brand battery drill has LH chuck screw.
2 counts against as intended tool (No variable speed and NiCads) but as robophiles we don't give flying one.
Found the nearest K-mart to me. Will swing past and have a look sometime when I have a bit more spare cash.
@Shane been thinking more about why we still use drills. I guess its more because you can always get them. They are a bit of a pain to mount but not too bad and you can often get away without a hub. Just screw wheel on to thread or if you really need just use a nut and a bit of plate which is much easier than having to turn something and key it. If you could get gearboxes + hubs for <$40 I think you would be on to a winner. Otherwise I really think most people will keep using drills.
Does anyone remember how long you get from a single NiCad pack? I am thinking I might need to parallel the two but if I can get away without it would be much easier.
I can probably get the magnum 550's down to about $40, but I'd have to buy a fair quantity of them to get them cheap enough, though I'd do it if it would help the sport.
The magnums are much stronger then drill motors. The pretty much use the same motors too.

The issue with the Magnums and similar style of motors is the keyed shaft, which is harder for a complete noob to fit a cheap wheel to. I much prefer that type of output shaft, but you either need a broach or you have to buy a hub or a complete wheel with a keyed hub.
If we could make a really cheap keyed shaft to Bunnings wheel hub, it would make the Magnums much more attractive. The other possibility is to expand the project to have a budget bot and an equivalent mid-price bot using upgraded parts. With two options, builders can see how to build ultra cheap and how to take it up a level if they have a bit more cash.
Like I said really needs to be <$40 for combo in order to make it attractive as a budget option. Drills with red wheels more like $30. _________________ Steven Martin

You do know on a large quantity order I can get the output shafts changed to whatever you like?
I could probably also even get a similar wheel more suited to robotic combat, but in different sizes.
Drills with red wheels may be <$30, but I'd prefer to spend the extra $10 get the stronger and more suitable motor and gearbox myself.
And while you are replacing your $30 drill setup, I'd still enjoying my reliable $40 purchase
Hmm.. for about $43 I rekon I could offer the complete package with a range of wheels to suit.
I'd just talk to a wheel manufacturer and bring over some keyed wheels to fit straight onto the shafts. I can get them with different properties for traction and even different height/width.
If you guys were more prepared to work with me, I could get pretty much anything what you want at the prices you want, but you all grumble and hack things together and nobody actually tells me what they need.
