really the best way would be to make a bearing block that supports a shaft the wheel can attach to, and then the drill just turns it, not taking the wheel load. A wheel that big will certainly wreck the gearbox, or more likely snap off the hollow drill shaft. Smile

something like this, no need to make it aluminium. you could just weld something up from steel, use a brass bushing, steal something similar from another item Razz etc

With the way the threaded shaft is breaking, I would say bearings mounts on either side of the wheel.

Thanks guys this really helps
Glen Very Happy i am going to try this Idea do you think we should still tap out the threaded rod? Its only about 1mm on either side of the drill chuck mount. If so do you think where the rod screws into the threaded drill mount would be a weak point? i am not sure how to get this bit of it working Confused

I cant find a pic anymore (might be in the photogallery of the forum) but George down in VIC had an awesome setup where he used the little universal joints from cheap socket sets to transfer the drive to the drive shaft.

Great idea cause theyd be easy to mount, you just drill and tap them for a grub screw or just pin them to the shafts, and they take alot of misalignment to stop them working (and lets face it, its gunna happen sooner or later Razz)

Definitely avoid welding to the shafts though, the metal goes heaps brittle then the pins snap off inside the gearbox, been there done that Shocked !

edit - found it, you can see the setup in the first pic -

Double edit - yeah you do get bushings from a bearing supplier. or just use normal bearings. whatever works!
