NSW Season 8 - 2011

As far as I know there won't be any more events for this year, so why not start early planning next year... To be honest we need to do a lot of planning as a group if we're to ensure things don't get worse Shocked

The beetles have really taken off, so no reason to hold back there. Main concern is construction of a portable beetle arena so we can try for public events at places such as Serial space or wherever...

I know Nick just got back from a very long and well deserved holiday, but what's thoughts on that arena? I paid my membership fees for this year as did I think everyone else, so could we use that money to directly fund it rather than Nick's generous yet unfair offer to front it all himself? Even if its not enough it'd be a large chunk.

I obtained the details for starting a club at UTS, it's ridiculously complicated but may be worth persuing, as the uni offers generous grants to clubs and members don't have to be strictly from the uni. I'd need to round up 15 other UTS peoples to start it however, so i'll see how that goes... Smile Bonus is there isn't already a 'robotics' club and a lot of people seem damn interested when they see mine, so might have luck!

Hope no one thinks i'm jumping the gun, just keeping up the enthusiasm/ procrastinating horrifically. Embarassed

Proposed dates for this year : Draft only.

16th April - Jeff Backyard Cleanup day + Club social meet

7th May - First proper Ant competition in Sydney? Also Beetle Comp?

25th June - Feathers!

13th August - Could be either?

1-2nd October Battle Shed - See how the year progresses, we might be able to revive battleshed.

3rd December - Holidays Bash, maybe more of a social meet, with a special challenge, like some soccer events or something like the annihilator a few years ago? Was pretty fun even though I could only make the 1st day..

Most important is setting a meet date with ok by Jeff, to help organise his backyard, imho.

nah good call dude!

definately follow up the uni thing. If we can get something off the ground there it could potentially do wonders for us.

as for the arena, as i mentioned Nick, happy to come help if extra hands / time spent is all that's needed to get it built. (My own time permitting of course)

I think we should also set a date, sometime say about 3 months into next year, and say 'that date is for featherweights' - people will have lots of time and money to get their feathers built (money as time = money) and we can get a bit of a feather revitalisation going on.

Yeah major priority should be given to building a portable beetle arena.

As far as membership monies go, nope not everyone has paid. If we round up the remaining money and put it toward the arena that would be a big help.

I'm back and raring to get started on the arena! Actually I am glad I didn't start before my holiday as I spend quite a bit of time reading a book on welding; I can use that knowledge to make a much better arena. Some help would definitely be good, but its probably just a 2 person job, more would be just getting in the way.

I can do all the work at my place, but it would be super handy if there is some place undercover to lay out the welding jig and not have to worry about rain or moving it until the job is all done.

I could probably offer the use of my double garage for such an activity if need be. Or at least one half permenant and both when necessary.

That should be more than enough - the jig is just a sheet of MDF around 1.5 x 2m, plus some space to walk around it. A nice flat floor would be fantastic and we can stand the jig and all the tubing against a wall while its not being used. What suburb are you in?

As soon as the weather clears, I am starting to buy materials.

LOL, we might have been neighbours! I escaped about 3 years ago so I know the area fairly well.

Yeah, I think we spoke about it once. You said you lived off an unrecallable street off Merindah road. Which is the same area I live off now. Any chance of recalling which street out of interest?

@Jaemus: Pssht!! But where do you live now huh? And where are you buying and presumably planning on living for a number of years? Wink
