Its Google's version of hotmail.
a web-browser based Email system that offers one gigabyte of storage (unlike Hotmail), and they make their money by scanning the text of your emails and displaying small keyword-relevant ads (like Google does). Some people have been upset at the privacy implications of this though..
Its still in "beta" (like everything google does), it seems most web-services company like to stay in beta for ages since it helps release them from any responsibility to provide a stable service (they can say, well, we warned you it was beta, you shouldnt have relied upon it to store your will or lotto numbers on), so they are only offering accounts to people who "invited" by other G-Mail users.
The present perception amongst net-geeks is that G-Mail accounts are highly desireable since
1. Google hopefully wont go broke tomorrow so your email address is "guaranteed" to exist for a long time, even if you change ISP's,
2. because its a relatively new service, all the "good" email addresses arent already taken (unlike Hotmail), so you dont need to have johnsmithismyname2004@whatever.com, you can just have johnsmith@
3. because its google, it has better karma associated with it than hotmail addresses do, since hotmail is heavily associated with microsoft, spammers and net-newbies.
4 and because its invite-only at the moment, people naturally want to get-in early for prestige sake..
So if you need a new web-mail address, its probably worth taking karmond up on his offer.. _________________ Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people
