my drum is a 65mm square pipe (bunnings) with the red wheels (bunnings) cut to fit inside the ends and with skateboard ball-bearings (ozmosis) pressed into them. it is running on a 5/16 threaded rod (bunnings) with 5/16 bolts (bunnings) as teeth.
dats all i will sai 4 now coz i got 2 catch some Z's, im in america on a tour called G'Day USA, quite tiring.

Making a successful drum with virtually no tools and a low budget is challenging! I don't know any suppliers down in Melbourne, but in general you should go for much stronger bearings, metal end caps if possible (you have a welder at least) and round tube for the body - weight for weight, round tube is much stronger than square tube.

The other area to look at is replacing the threaded rod, which is very soft steel, with something stronger. you can get more strength without extra weight by using tube for the axle. IE a 1" tube that weighs less than a 1/2" solid rod will be MUCH stiffer. Google steel suppliers in Melbourne and then phone around.

Does anyone know if using screws as teeth like this (second image from the top) would work in a feather weight, friction-driven from a drill motor? So, would the screw teeth bend, crack, dent, etc.

Wood screws would most likely burr over you would have to use thick real "steel" screws not those cheapo gold or galv screws.

Why not weld some spikes on or use some high tensile bolts all the way threw with extra thread pokeing out and sharpen them?

Well, anyone who's seen the 2008 rumble would know that I have bad experience with bolt spikes... Smile
And I liked this idea because I don't have a welder. So those Zenith zinc bolts probably wouldn't work?

id buy some 6 or 8mm steel screws the ones that come in a bag and there all oiled up to stop em rusting then you know there real steel.

You could maby tek screw a steel strip onto your drum.
