Yeah Premier supports Quad cores from Premier Pro 2.

While water cooling and overclocking to extremes is fun I wouldnt bother just for video editing. My Q6600 runs stably at 3.4GHz, but currently I have it clocked at 3.0GHz. Why you ask?

In the all applications I run that use the 4 cores none seem to use all the available processing cycles in each. So running at 3.4GHz gives only a few percent performance increase over running at 3.0GHz.

While as far as I am aware noone has had any issues with CPU's dying at 3.4GHz you still will theoretically get a longer lifespan out of the CPU at a lower frequency. Also, I can run up to 3GHz on stock voltage, so it doesnt really put any extra stress on the CPU.

The Q6600 is a great overclokcing CPU, but that doesnt mean it is always worthwhile! That said, down the track when you need some more power then you can always see how much you can squeeze out.

Also unless your in it for the fun, getting your super high end overclock can be a lot of tweaking and fiddling with voltages, timings, ram setting etc Smile

I've been squeezing my 3200+ with a mild 35% OC for around 6 months. For an old chip, it still does okay, but I know every time I boot it up, it's screaming at me to replace it with a Q6600 Cool

That video site is out of date now, but worth a read just to see Darth Vader do a PC review.

The shopping list is pretty complete now, I just need to pick the quietest, coolest CPU heatsink and PSU, then check for best prices.

I had to tweak the current PC quite a bit to get it running at 3GHz and then tweak it back down recently to keep it cooler, so messing about in the BIOS is no problem - I have been doing that to PCs for almost 20 years.

Install 64bit OS so you can use all your ram. You might even be starting to see performance gains in video etc with 64bit stuff now.
Does windows let you run 32bit apps on a 64bit install (with a memory limitation for the app)? I know Linux does if you install the 32 bit libs. The only issue you have is drivers for the 64bit stuff.

Thanks all, I just put in an order for most of the new kit. I left off the video card as some research showed that most of my software cannot use the extra speed and features of the current generation; I can always upgrade later if the old card starts dragging the chain.

now ive got a bit of time to play with im just fixing somethings ive wanted to do a while back.

first thing is my laptop is stupidly quiet when you plug headphones into it. its pretty blardy loud with its inbuilt speakers but at full power its very quiet through the headphones.

i presume its because the speakers have their own built in amplifiers? do i need some kind of inline amp or something like that to get them to be full power again Confused

thats the only reason i still have my desktop is to listen to loouud music Razz

If the laptop has 'Speaker out' and the headphone volume is crap, then it is probably meant for powered speakers. You might try 600 ohm high impedance headphones, otherwise you will need a small amp. You can get cheap & small headphone amps at music stores; I have a link if you are interested.

Greatings from Taiwan.
Is $285 cheap for a 22" LCD monitor? Or $28 for a 4Gb flash drive?
Here's a photo outside the computer shop. AUD$1 = TWD$29
