it was the "car stethoscope" that found it too. Lucky i had the spare engine (i used a bit of hose of that to listen with)
nah it only seems to be connected to the intake manifold.
It has an air filter in the bottom section, NFI what in the top. It looks like it might be sposed to do something when air pressure in the manifold is high possibly, the big tube is all full of gunky black crap.
Alternately it might be something with making it run leaner when its coasting or idling. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

Looks like it's could be similar to a catch can, that or it's a blow off valve _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

That's what I can use that air horn compressor for glen. I need a buffer tank, a solenoid and the exhaust noise maker thing on a blow off valve stat! _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
it sounds like the EGR valve, and looks kinda like it could be one aswell... i replaced one yesterday but not positive on it or its function been too tired to look it up and yeha chances are the top hose/ compartment is cloged with crap _________________ as a shadow is seen and not heard i am here

ive already ripped 15kg worth of emmisions crap out of the fiat. aside from becoming worthless after 30 years sitting stagnant, it does nothing but choke the engine down, rip it all out!
I actually like some of the emissions stuff. It makes the car use less fuel and makes engine braking more effective.
With regards the gulp valve I don't know, this one seems somewhat different to that diagram. There is no electronics associated with it and both tubes come out the middle section.
Exhaust gas recirculation starts on the other side of the engine and comes into the air cleaner on this car.
This is all connected to the intake side of things, there is still a small amount of air that gets sucked through the new one when its running but i don't know if its sposed to do that.
I'll empty the car out tomorrow and get to the shop manual for it, see what it says. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
Have a question probably for Dumhead about the CA18DET.
Was wondering if its a viable option to get a replacement chip or modified chip for the ecu instead of replacing the whole unit if you want to remove factory presets and increase boost etc.
Am led to believe the settings are stored on the chip for this model but dont know how black this black art is or is it a can of worms going in that direction.
Any suggestions muchly appreciated _________________ Bots that do not destroy you, only make you stronger.

Hey George. I always though your S13 had an SR in it
Since it's a CA, I can chime in here. I put a Nistune management system into my S13, It's a daughter board that wires into the standard ECU. I got mine done through PLMS Developments. Was $450 for the hardware installation and software. Free updates on the software for life too. Matt Brown is the guy that runs the Nistune software and he's really helpful. It's pretty cool to play with. I just have a USB lead coming out of the kick panel that plugs into my laptop. Since your a victorian, you can speak to Sam Cornell AKA Dr Drift about any tuning needs. He's provided me with a fair bit of informaton on the CA's in the last few months with regards to my "SC13" project (Supercharged CA18DE S13)
definitely put an SR in, but if you don't want to do that all you need is some solder wick, a chip socket, an EPROM, and an EPROM programmer.
I have all the maps somewhere.
It's a pain to really tune it, but just getting rid of limits, etc is easy. _________________ The Engine Whisperer

Thanks for the links, trying to work out whats the best solution for the ecu if the following are done.
Exhaust, FMIC, Fuel pump, not sure about an exhaust manifold or anything else yet.
Brakes will be upsized as well as suspension.
Even though the idea of going around a corner looking at a laptop while eating a big Mac has its charm (auto), I would be satisfied atm with just getting it tuned for the above updates so hoping just a chip mod will do that.
Any suggestions welcome as to what I should be aiming for with the above changes to the car …
do you have to cut a hole in the battery tray for the cooler pipe? _________________ Bots that do not destroy you, only make you stronger.

you don't have to, but it's the neatest way.
If you do it right you can just turn the battery sideways (you need a small one, but it's close to the factory size) and the pipe will fit down beside it. _________________ The Engine Whisperer
