I looked at converting Sub into a more realistic 4WD bot on the weekend - If I cut the frame down and get the top & bottom remade, then I can squeeze in four of the Banebots motors, two Victors and a battery pack. It wouldn't have the magnetic hold down but it should still have quite high traction and the parts will be replaceable. Its not hard to do but it would have to be on lower priority than all the other bots - next year, perhaps?

For Balrog, I will make the frame much taller so the gas tank fits and there will probably be much smaller wedges

Progress
I finished prepping the Mag motors and gearbox for Sauron today. It doesn't look much different on the outside, but inside, all the screws have been upgraded and locktited, plus the motor mount plates were modified to allow the frame design to work. Here is how the POP looks on a print of the frame.

Sauron has grown huge from its beginnings as a featherweight; the shell is now 500mm across and all the internal parts have gotten larger as well, particularly the battery packs. Somehow, it still just comes in under the weight limit Confused.

The next job is to build a cardboard frame to check that everything fits before the frame is cut out.

Very Happy Most awesome!
I think having double the weight limit opens up a lot of possibilities. Twisted Evil

me thinks current lightweight will only be able to compete at next few somps because once that gets going ill need to build a lightweight orbit or a solid lifter or something

There is still a heap of work to do, even though Sauron has three people on it's build team; your lightweight is safe for a fair while.

My point was Nick, I don't have the $$$$ to compete with your spinner of doom, so I would build the cheapest thing I could do that I know would survive a match with it... Plough disc wedge bot... The whole reason I built Schmackhed that way, I just wanted to battle, without spending lots of time or money rebuilding it Razz

I've had a T2M-esque lightweight on the cards for a while, but very little driving force to actually build it. The winch motors on 24v with A123's does kinda make me feel happy in the pants though Laughing

You can have your build thread back now Razz

Invade any time...

I really liked the T2M concept and since you have all that Hardox, it is really only lacking some modded winches and big wheels. I reckon you should flog the Silvia and make some custom wheels. Laughing

Lol. Not selling my Silvia, I'll sell a kidney before I sell my car Razz I got one design I'd like to build for a LW, but I need to get the FW version built first to see if it's worth scaling up Razz

Progress
The new wheels are finally getting close to finished; I haven't had much luck with pouring plastics in the past, but its time to put that behind me and make some new parts:

The new feature of the molds is the red silicone rubber gaskets. The first material I used wasn't thick enough and allowed a small amount of leakage; the new 1mm thick, adhesive-backed rubber stays where its put and conforms to the mold body perfectly. The hubs are milled, sanded and etched, so I don't really have any excuses to delay mixing the urethane. Laughing

After cutting the gaskets, I set to work on CAD for Chuck; There were quite a few faults with the armour (now fixed) and after a weight check, it looks like time to get the curvy new armour cut.
