question! any body know where to get a switchmode to run 6-7v down to 1.5v with maybe 1 or 2 amps tops?

this is for the rc car im putting a remote operated starter into, at the moment it just runs through a dropping resistor that absolutely annihilates the battery in about 2 minutes Sad and im not sure whether a linear regulator would help a huge deal? cheeers.

as in two minutes on and off Razz it still works after that but runs too slowly to turn it over all the way.

am curious if anybody out theres got any small linear actuators or knows where to get them for good price, did some research and only places ive found either cost too much or only come with 12 volt motors and since i plan running 24 volt motors overvolted to 36 then that wont work

was throwing up the idea of making one form drill belt driving via timing belts etc to some acme thread but alot of work and hassle, also eyeballing some of the car seat actuators but yeah if anybody could help would be appreciated.

trying to finalise parts to make lightweight into a crusher/lifter (think complete control style here)

thanks in advance

There's an Oatley Electronics kit for a glow plug driver.
I'm not sure how good it is, but it could be worth a look.

Ask Jason about the actuators - he knows a local place that sells a large range at the cheapes prices in Australia - I am interested myself.

I am looking for a small geared motor with reasonable torque and around 1 to 10 rpm. Its to drive a piezo igniter for a flamethrower via a cam - my best guess is to hack a servo - any better suggestions? I thought about a solenoid, but it would need to be fairly big to operate the piezo lighter, which has quite a strong spring action.

the central locking gearmotors would be okay, there pretty small just big. i have some of those tiny 60rpm gearmotors from jaycar as well maybe they might do it.

Why not just use something solid state ? Seems like a bit of a pita to get the torque needed to depress the piezo igniter, when you could make a better (and continuous) spark with a flyback and a driver. Powerlabs has a simple one you could try http://www.powerlabs.org/flybackdriver.htm - It could even double as an AM radio killer if you wish.

Actually, if your feeling lazy, a disposable camera flash with a simple relay trigger would do the job too.

Laughing The output of that circuit would need to be toned down a bit - I just need a few mm of spark! I am sure I have seen igniters that produced a continuous spark from battery power, I just couldn't find one over the weekend.

yeah there are battery powered lighters that make a nice spark from an AA battery, but they're very rare. I bought one over 6 years ago and have been looking for more ever since!

The small gearmotors I used in my first beetle are 70rpm and very high torque from jaycar, just a suggestion.
I know that the mythbuster guys use neon transformers, you can get cheap ones for 12v supply and a good supply of sparks Smile

It sounds like the easiest thing is a battery powered lighter, followed by a motor driven piezo lighter - the HV circuits on the web are all a bit large and over the top for power and would be just as much effort to make. Next question: do car lock actuators retract when they lose power, or do they stay in whatever position they were at?
