Drivin... small pickle

Hello friends Smile ! Being a mid 16yr old I thought it was about due to apply for my learners drivers licence soon, however i've got a bit of a problem, I don't have a car to learn to drive in and collect the practice hours. My family does have a car, but the insurance apparently disallows anyone under the age of 25 from driving it, as well as the fact it is a company car. So I will either have to find a close friend to help me out (highly unlikely)... or actualy *shudder* buy my own car Sad Any ideas? I doubt I afford a car over $1000... Sad

welcome to my world, i guess where not lucky enough to have mummy and daddy buy as brand new bmw's Razz

buy anything under $1000 and youll probably spend three times as much fixing it, as has been the case with out fiat which was around that price range. altho i do love working on it hehe

dunno about that.
theres <$1000 cars that dont suck.
and it helps to get something common and if you dont mind moderate maintenence your self then it may not be all bad.

friend of mine got one and drove it for 6 months, was great untill she drove it with no water in the radiator.
you just gotta check stuff more often, check the water and oil (speaking of which i need to put some more in mine). and just generally keep an eye on things.

provided the engine and driveline are in decent working order, everything else you can fix yourself pretty much. just dont expect miracles. When the shocks need replacing toss it and get another, your basically buying the fact that the car is registered.

the ongoing maintenence is higher of course

yes with cars checking of eveyrthing and general maintanance is a MUST, i check over my cars stuff and make sure eveyrthings fine and my dad does a once over of every other car and no problems so far.

My next door neighbours who have 12 kids (WACKYNESS) have trashed two cars just from not looking after them and from not checking water in batteries and lil stuff like that.

But we got onw of the cars and spent prob 400 bucks getting it running again and its not sitting in a vacant property a few horus away to hoon round in anytime we go down there and for a crapsled its got one some growl and bite in it though, such noise and powa for such a crappy car Very Happy

You might be able to offer to pay the difference in insurance to the company and get them to change the insurance policy so that you can learn to drive in the company car. You would do best if one of the bosses has a kid about your age.

Alex, my son, turns 16 in July. I have all of that fun to look forward to.

Was awesome when I got my learners, I was driving nearly 180Km a day to TAFE everyday, I worked out I racked up around 15000km in 6 months. Getting your license is awesome. You just jump in your car, drop a burnout* and go where ever you want to go**!

For your first car, look for something cheap to run. Anything under 1.5L is generally a good choice. Ford Lasers, Holden Barina, Suzuki Swifts (Old models) & Hyundai Excels are all great cheap little cars. I highly recommend an Excel, mate of mine has a 1996 model, it was 50 000km past service... We dropped the oil yesterday and it looked good enough to put back in it Shocked

*Optional, consequences must be considered first.
** Fuel : Wallet ratio dictacts when and how often you go somewhere...

most insurance companies are ok with under 25s driving while on L's.
Usually from an insurance point of view the instructing driver is in control.

It might be worth checking that out anyway. It could help, at least till you get P's.
